Wear comfortable walking shoes or trainers with a secure fit and a sole that grips wet surfaces. For most Halong shore excursions, these are the most practical single pair: your day may include the cruise-port walk, vehicle steps, boat boarding and cave paths. Choose shoes you already know are comfortable.
If swimming or kayaking is confirmed, carry a small second pair for the water activity if needed. You do not need to spend the entire shore day in beach footwear just because the itinerary includes a beach stop.

Match your shoes to the parts of your excursion
Halong Bay cruises with caves or viewpoints
Walking shoes or trainers are a useful default. Halong Shore Excursion’s Before You Go guidance notes that some attractions involve stairs and steep paths, including cave and Titov Island visits. Check the tread under your shoes; a familiar pair with a worn-smooth sole is a poor choice for damp steps.
Bring only the support and protection you need. Heavy hiking boots are not a requirement for every bay cruise, while fashion trainers chosen only for appearance may not provide the grip you want. The deciding factors are your actual route, fit and traction.
A city visit, café stop or private drive
Comfortable everyday walking shoes normally make more sense than formal shoes. Even a vehicle-based itinerary can involve getting in and out, walking from the drop-off and crossing uneven surfaces. Choose a pair you can comfortably keep on for the whole outing.
Kayaking, swimming or a beach stop
Water shoes or secure sandals can be useful when the activity will make your feet wet. Check whether the same trip also includes cave stairs: a thin water shoe may be comfortable in water but uncomfortable on a long walk. Keep your walking pair dry and change for the activity when the guide says it is practical.
Can you wear sandals or flip-flops?
Secure walking sandals with a heel strap and a grippy sole may work for a warm day if you are used to walking in them. Open footwear leaves toes exposed, so consider the cave paths, boarding steps and your own stability before choosing it.
Loose flip-flops are better kept for the beach or a short change of footwear. They are not a good all-day choice for port walking, repeated steps or wet boat boarding. Avoid high heels and shoes that slide around your foot.
Do you need waterproof shoes?
Not necessarily. Think about what will make them wet. Light rain on a walking route is different from stepping into water during an activity. Waterproof footwear can help with rain, but it does not mean you should stand in deep water or assume water cannot enter from the top.
For a mixed boat-and-walking day, a familiar pair plus spare socks and a separate bag for damp items is a simple setup. If rain affects the excursion itself, check the Halong rainy-day planning guide rather than treating footwear as the only issue.
What if you have sore feet or find steps difficult?
Wear the footwear or support already recommended for your needs; do not replace it with an unfamiliar “travel shoe” on the morning of your port call. Tell Halong Shore Excursion about walking limits before booking and ask which stops can be omitted, where you can sit and how you will board the vehicle and sightseeing boat.
Better shoes cannot turn a stepped route into a step-free one. The limited-mobility planning checklist explains the separate arrangements to confirm.
Clean muddy footwear before an onward border
If a forest path, garden or wet stop leaves soil, seeds or plant material in the tread, do not pack the shoes untouched. Check the grooves, edges and laces, then clean and dry the pair before the next border arrival. Ask the ship where and how outdoor footwear may be cleaned. Keeping a dirty pair inside a separate bag contains the mess, but it does not replace cleaning.
The rule depends on your next destination. For example, Australia’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry tells travellers to clean and dry hiking equipment used overseas, including footwear, and remove soil, seeds and plant material. It also advises checking shoes for insects and other hitchhikers. Items may be inspected on arrival.
If Australia is on your onward itinerary, check the current official rule for your exact situation and declare the item if you are unsure; declaration does not automatically mean confiscation. For another destination, use that country’s official border or agriculture authority. A second clean pair can be useful after a muddy outing, but cleaning and any declaration still need to be handled without using the return buffer for your ship.
A quick check before you leave your cabin
- Walk around in the shoes and check for slipping at the heel or pressure points.
- Fasten laces or straps securely, with loose ends out of the way.
- Check that the soles are in good condition and suitable for the expected surfaces.
- Pack spare socks or activity footwear only when your itinerary calls for them.
- Ask your guide about any stop that exceeds your comfortable walking ability.
