Halong Shore Excursion

Which SIM Card Is Best for Cruise Passengers in Halong?

The best SIM or eSIM for a Halong cruise call is the one that works on your phone, covers your shore itinerary and is ready before you need to meet your guide. For a short visit, an existing roaming plan or a travel eSIM prepared in advance may save a store trip. A registered local SIM can make sense for a longer Vietnam itinerary or when you need a Vietnamese number.

Halong Shore Excursion recommends choosing around those needs rather than buying the biggest data allowance. Allow time for setup and testing; installing a SIM is not the same as confirming that you can send a message from the port.

Choose the type of connection first

  • Your home carrier’s roaming plan: useful if Vietnam is included at a cost you accept and the service is already enabled. Check what triggers a daily charge and whether calls, texts and data are included.
  • A travel data eSIM: useful when your phone supports it and you want to prepare before arrival. Check the actual Vietnam network used, coverage, validity and whether the plan supplies data only.
  • A Vietnamese local SIM or eSIM: useful when its allowance, local calling options or longer validity fit your trip. Include registration and any store visit in the decision, and verify the particular package’s inclusions.

Viettel offers a tourist registration channel, making it one local option to compare. Check the operator’s coverage for the places on your itinerary and the support available with the actual package. A national network ranking does not confirm reception in a particular cabin or at every stop on the bay.

Check your phone before buying

Confirm that the device is unlocked for another carrier and supports the specific physical SIM or eSIM being sold. Compatibility can depend on the exact model and where it was purchased. On iPhone, Settings → General → About should show No SIM Restrictions beside Carrier Lock if the phone is unlocked.

Prepare eSIM installation while you have a reliable internet connection. Ask when the package’s validity starts: purchase, installation, activation or first connection may be different stages. Follow the provider’s timing instructions so you do not start a short allowance unnecessarily early.

Check these package details before payment:

  • The total price and any activation charge.
  • Whether the data allowance is per day or for the whole package, and what happens when it runs out.
  • The expiry time, top-up options and any automatic renewal.
  • Whether sharing data through a personal hotspot is permitted.
  • Whether ordinary calls and SMS are included, and which number receives them.

Complete local registration on the phone you will use

For a local SIM, use the operator’s own channel or an authorized registration point and have the subscription registered in your name. Bring your valid passport for an in-person purchase and ask what entry or identity documents are needed. Viettel’s tourist registration page requests passport and portrait images; do not assume every visitor can complete activation instantly online.

Use your intended handset for registration and testing. Vietnam’s subscriber rules require renewed facial verification after a change of device, and outgoing calls and SMS can be suspended when verification is not completed. Before moving a local SIM to a companion’s phone, ask the operator how to complete the required check.

If your ship is holding your passport, ask about obtaining the document before planning a store visit. Do not assume a screenshot will be accepted in its place.

Keep your home number and travel data separate

On a phone using two lines, give them recognisable labels such as Home and Vietnam, then check each setting separately:

  • Travel data: select the intended SIM or eSIM for mobile data. Follow its provider’s instructions about data roaming; a travel eSIM may need this enabled to work.
  • Home data: turn off data roaming on the home line unless you have chosen to use its roaming plan. Review any setting that allows data to switch between SIMs instead of assuming the selected data line is the only setting that matters.
  • Calls and texts: selecting a travel data line does not disable the home line’s calling and messaging service. Check incoming and outgoing call and SMS charges, including how verification messages are treated, before leaving that line active.
  • An unused home line: if you do not need it during the outing, you can turn the line off in the phone’s SIM settings. You will not receive its ordinary calls or SMS while it is off, so arrange any essential verification first.

On iPhone, look under Settings → Cellular or Mobile Data, then select the relevant number for its settings. Android labels vary by manufacturer. Ask the provider to check the actual phone if the choices are unclear; do not delete an eSIM just to stop using it temporarily.

A data-only eSIM does not supply ordinary local calling just because messaging apps work. You can normally keep the WhatsApp number already registered to your account while using another SIM for internet. The WhatsApp guide for a Halong port call explains that distinction and how to prepare your contact.

Test the connection ashore

Once service is activated and you have coverage, turn off Wi-Fi briefly to test mobile data. Load a new webpage, open the map you need and send a message. If ordinary calls or SMS are part of your plan, ask the provider how to verify those too. Keep the receipt, package details and support contact.

Check your settings before the ship sails

A plan covering Vietnam on land does not automatically include your cruise ship’s cellular network. The UK communications regulator Ofcom explains that mobile use on a ferry or cruise can involve satellite connections with higher charges. Do not judge the applicable tariff from a view of the coastline.

If you intend to use only the ship’s Wi-Fi after returning aboard, turn on Airplane Mode, then turn Wi-Fi back on if needed and connect to the ship’s network. Check that cellular service remains off. Wi-Fi access may require a separate onboard package; changing phone settings does not buy that access.

Turning off data roaming alone is not the same as disabling cellular service. Calls and texts need their own plan checks. Also distinguish a WhatsApp call from your carrier’s Wi-Fi Calling feature: the latter can still have calling charges even over Wi-Fi. Check its terms or turn that feature off if you do not intend to use it.

If you want cellular service at sea, confirm the exact ship and maritime network, package and usage charges with your carrier before using it. Review every active line and any other family device that has its own SIM. A local SIM does not guarantee reception throughout a Halong Bay sightseeing trip or replace the ocean ship’s internet service at sea.

Keep your pickup and return details offline even with a working plan. The Halong terminal Wi-Fi guide explains a backup that does not depend on finding a guest network at arrival.
