Do not assume a Halong Bay sightseeing boat will collect you beside your ocean cruise ship. Halong International Cruise Port has a quay for large international ships and separate domestic wharves for local sightseeing boats. Your local boat may board within the same port complex, or it may depart from another harbour such as Tuan Chau. The exact handoff must be confirmed for your ship, date and booked vessel.
“Departs from Halong International Cruise Port” means the local boat uses that port; it does not mean its gangway is next to your cabin exit. Halong Shore Excursion should name the ocean-ship landing, passenger exit, guide meeting point and local-boat berth separately.
Why the phrase “port pickup” causes confusion
Four locations can exist in one excursion confirmation:
- Ocean-ship berth or tender landing: where your international cruise brings passengers ashore.
- Authorised passenger exit: the point you reach after the ship, port and security process.
- Guide or driver meeting point: the agreed public place where the excursion takes responsibility for your group.
- Local sightseeing-boat berth: where you check in and board the vessel that tours Halong Bay.
These points may be close, but their names are not interchangeable. Port controls, the assigned ocean berth, the local boat’s berth and the day’s passenger routing determine the path. A promise of “pickup at the port” answers none of those details.
First confirm where your ocean ship will dock or land passengers. Then match that information to the local-boat confirmation.
Can the local boat come directly alongside the cruise ship?
Treat direct alongside transfer as unavailable unless the cruise line, port and excursion operator explicitly confirm it. A large ship’s international quay is a controlled operating area. The existence of domestic sightseeing wharves in the same port does not give a local boat permission to collect individual passengers at the ocean ship.
Do not infer direct pickup from a photograph showing two vessels in the same harbour. Do not infer it from “private boat,” “port departure” or “door-to-door service.” Private timing may be flexible by agreement, but the boat must still use an authorised berth and follow port instructions.
If someone offers a water transfer beside the ship, request written confirmation from the responsible operator stating the approved boarding point, vessel name, passenger process and weather fallback. A sales message alone is not enough to bypass the normal passenger route.
What happens when both vessels use Halong International Cruise Port?
The port officially separates its international cruise facilities from four domestic wharves serving sightseeing boats, overnight boats, yachts and other local vessels. The convenient outcome is that a road journey to another harbour may be unnecessary. The remaining transfer still needs to be mapped.
Your group may need to leave the ocean ship, follow the day’s port route, pass through the terminal or another controlled point, meet the guide, walk or use authorised internal transport, and then check in at the domestic side. Never convert “same port” into a fixed walking time without confirmation.
Ask the operator to send:
- the name or number of the domestic wharf;
- a meeting landmark that port staff recognise;
- whether a guide meets before or after the passenger exit;
- whether walking, a shuttle or a vehicle connects the two points;
- the check-in cut-off for the local boat;
- a contact method if the ocean ship uses another gangway.
The guide to the Halong cruise-passenger exit helps separate leaving the ship from reaching the public pickup area.
What if the day boat departs from Tuan Chau?
A Tuan Chau departure adds a mainland transfer before and after the bay cruise. Official route descriptions show that some Halong sightseeing itineraries can use Tuan Chau International Marina, while some can use Halong International Cruise Port. The route name alone may not settle which harbour your assigned vessel uses.
The booking should state who provides the transfer, where the vehicle meets you, when local-boat check-in closes and where the boat returns. Do not assume the return harbour matches the departure harbour unless it is written.
Count the road transfer in both directions, including loading, parking and walking between the vehicle and boat. If the ocean ship is released late, the driver reaching Tuan Chau does not make a shared boat wait. Read the Halong port to Tuan Chau guide when comparing this arrangement with a boat using the domestic port.
What changes if your ship uses tenders?
A tender call adds another vessel and another controlled timetable. The ocean ship’s tender brings you to the cruise line’s stated landing; it is not normally the Halong sightseeing boat. You then follow the landing procedure to the excursion meeting point and local boat.
Record the outward tender queue process, landing name, return-tender point and last acceptable return under the ship’s instructions. A morning landing is not proof that the return tender uses exactly the same position. The Halong tender guide explains why the arrangement must be checked aboard.
If the local bay cruise finishes close to the last tender, the plan is too dependent on every handoff running perfectly. Set the local boat’s return target early enough to complete disembarkation, any vehicle movement, the tender queue and the final ride to the ocean ship.
How much transfer time should you allow?
There is no reliable universal number. Calculate the handoff from the actual locations and the slowest passenger in the group. The route can change with the berth, gangway, security direction, shuttle operation, crowd level, luggage and mobility needs.
Ask for separate planning times for:
- ship clearance and passenger release;
- ship gangway to the guide meeting point;
- meeting point to local-boat check-in;
- check-in and waiting before boarding;
- local-boat disembarkation at the end;
- return from that berth to the ship gangway.
The usable excursion begins after the first handoff and ends before the return handoff. Apply the usable-time calculation for a Halong port call before choosing the boat duration.
How should passengers with limited mobility plan the handoff?
“A few steps away” is not an accessibility description. Ask about the actual surface, distance, kerbs, slopes, waiting places and any moving gangway or pontoon. State whether the passenger uses a wheelchair, walker, rollator or mobility scooter and whether they can stand or transfer.
The port route and local-boat boarding are two different access tests. A step-free terminal path does not prove the day boat has a suitable gangway, deck or toilet. Use the Halong boat accessibility checklist for the assigned vessel.
Ask who handles the mobility device during check-in and where the passenger can sit if the boat is not ready. Do not agree to an improvised lift. If the transfer cannot be described safely in advance, choose a land excursion or a verified vessel with a workable boarding method.
What should you carry between ship and day boat?
Keep the ocean ship card, required identity document, essential medicine, local-boat confirmation and guide contact with the passenger. Do not pack the only copy in a vehicle that separates from the group or in checked storage aboard the local boat.
Save the local boat’s name or registration, berth, guide number and return point. Your ocean ship’s name will not necessarily help domestic-wharf staff identify the sightseeing vessel. Before boarding, use the Halong day-boat checklist to match the vessel to the confirmation.
What if the ship releases passengers late?
Tell the guide or operator as soon as the delay becomes clear. Send the ship name, actual passenger status and the instruction shown aboard. Do not walk to an assumed berth while the operator is trying to redirect you.
For a shared day boat, ask whether check-in is still open and whether the vessel has departed. A private arrangement may move its agreed start, but only if the revised route and return remain workable. If the full cruise no longer fits, shorten the boat plan or use a land alternative; never preserve the original duration by spending the ship-return allowance.
If you reach the meeting point and see no guide, follow the missing-guide procedure instead of accepting an unsolicited replacement or taxi.
What if the ocean ship changes berth or gangway?
Reconfirm all four locations. A change at the ocean ship can alter the passenger exit and meeting route while the domestic boat keeps the same berth and sailing time. Send a photo or exact wording of the new ship notice to Halong Shore Excursion while you still have connectivity.
Keep one fallback landmark and one phone contact. Do not use the old map simply because the local boat has not changed. If the revised handoff cannot reach check-in with a safe return plan, the excursion needs to change.
Five lines your confirmation should contain
- “Your ocean ship is expected to use [berth or tender landing], subject to the ship’s final notice.”
- “Meet [guide] at [precise landmark] after following the authorised passenger route.”
- “Transfer to the local boat at [domestic wharf or other named harbour] by [walk, shuttle or vehicle].”
- “The local boat’s check-in and expected disembarkation are [confirmed times for this date].”
- “The agreed return target leaves the final port and ship process before all aboard.”
A confirmation missing one of these links leaves the passenger to solve it under time pressure.
The safe decision
Book when the complete ship-to-day-boat-to-ship chain is named and timed. Decline or revise the plan when “at Halong port” is the only location, the departure harbour is unclear, accessibility depends on guesswork, or the local boat returns too close to the ocean ship’s deadline.
Halong Shore Excursion should apply Ship + Arrival Date → ocean berth or tender → passenger exit → meeting point → domestic berth or Tuan Chau → named day boat → local disembarkation → protected ship return. That is the difference between two boats being in the same port and a transfer that actually works.
