A cruise passenger can try to buy and register a Vietnam SIM at an official carrier service point in Bai Chay, but do not assume a suitable tourist SIM is sold inside Halong International Cruise Port. Confirm that the branch can register a foreign passport, has the required SIM or eSIM, and is open during your usable time ashore.
Halong Shore Excursion recommends deciding whether the store trip is worth the queue, registration and testing time. For a single short port call, prearranged roaming or an eSIM activated before arrival may protect more of the day.
A current official service point to check
MobiFone’s official store locator currently lists:
- Name: Trung tâm giao dịch MobiFone Cái Dăm
- Address: 434 Ha Long Road, Bai Chay, Quang Ninh — Số 434 đường Hạ Long, phường Bãi Cháy, tỉnh Quảng Ninh
- Phone: 0203 384 6060
- Published hours: Monday–Saturday, 07:30–11:30 and 13:30–17:30
Listing checked on 13 September 2026. Call before travelling. The official directory confirms the service point and its published schedule; it does not prove live stock, today’s queue, foreign-passport registration or eSIM support.
A Viettel campaign list published in 2025 included a Bai Chay store at 539 Ha Long Road. That material was not used as current operating proof because it described participating stores for a particular campaign rather than a live branch directory.
Ask the branch these questions first
- Can this location register a new prepaid SIM for a cruise passenger using a foreign passport?
- Which original identity and entry documents are required?
- Is registration available during the ship’s arrival window, and is there a service cutoff before closing?
- Is a physical SIM or eSIM available for this phone model?
- What is the full price, data allowance, validity and renewal rule?
- How long is the current queue and activation process?
A useful Vietnamese question is: “Cửa hàng có đăng ký SIM mới cho người nước ngoài bằng hộ chiếu không?” It asks whether the branch registers a new SIM for a foreigner using a passport.
Keep the confirmed branch name, written address and reply offline. Tell the driver the exact shop rather than asking for “a SIM store.”
Bring the phone and identity document
Bring the unlocked phone you intend to use and the identity document the carrier confirms. If the ship holds your passport, ask onboard how and whether it can be released before committing to the trip. Do not assume a photocopy or phone image will be accepted.
Keep the passport in your control during the process and collect it before leaving the counter. Have the subscription registered in your own name through the carrier’s approved procedure. Avoid a supposedly ready-to-use SIM registered to another person.
Check that the phone supports the carrier’s SIM or eSIM and the required bands. For a dual-SIM phone, know which line will supply mobile data and whether data roaming should remain enabled or disabled for the home line. The SIM and eSIM decision guide explains these checks.
Count the complete store visit
The shore-time cost includes leaving the secured port area, transport to the correct branch, possible lunch closure or queue, registration, activation, testing and the onward or return journey. Published opening hours do not say when your phone will be ready.
Set a latest time to abandon the purchase. If the queue or registration problem passes that point, leave with enough time for the planned excursion or return. Use the Halong port-call buffer guide to protect the ship deadline.
If you have no data while travelling to the store, arrange both rides and save the pickup points before disconnecting from working internet. Do not make the return depend on the new SIM activating successfully. The taxi pickup guide helps prepare that offline journey.
Activate and test before leaving the counter
- Check that the number is registered in your name.
- Confirm the package, data allowance, validity and any automatic renewal.
- Keep the receipt, SIM package and carrier support details.
- Switch off Wi-Fi and test mobile data on your phone.
- Open a new web page and send a message.
- Test any call or SMS function you actually need.
- Ask staff to fix activation or phone settings while you are still there.
Do not let staff erase, reset or keep the phone unless you understand and accept what is required. Do not share banking, email or unrelated account passwords during SIM setup.
If the purchase cannot be completed
Use the roaming or eSIM backup prepared before arrival, or connect at a staffed venue long enough to confirm the next meeting. The terminal Wi-Fi guide explains why unverified guest access should remain a backup rather than the foundation of the port day.
Skip the SIM detour when the ship arrives late, the branch cannot confirm foreign-passport registration, the passenger needs assistance that has not been arranged, or the remaining window cannot absorb a queue and failed activation.
Halong Shore Excursion can apply Ship + Arrival Date → excursion-fit logic to the passenger exit, store schedule, transport, registration time and safe return margin. A flexible private day can move the stop by agreement, but the ship’s deadline still controls the decision.
