Halong Shore Excursion

Can You Snorkel on a Halong Shore Excursion?

Do not book a Halong port-day cruise assuming snorkelling is included. Plan to snorkel only when the operator confirms that the activity is permitted and offered on your actual departure, with an identified stop, suitable equipment and a workable return to your ocean ship. A swimming stop, a photograph of coral or snorkelling equipment on a boat’s facilities list does not settle those questions.

Halong Shore Excursion recommends deciding whether snorkelling is essential to your day or simply something you would try if available. If it is essential, get a specific answer before paying for the excursion. If it is optional, choose an itinerary you would enjoy without entering the water.

Why do Halong cruise websites give different answers?

Operator information checked on 9 September 2026 illustrates the problem. Swan Cruises’ onboard FAQ says snorkelling and diving are not permitted. Treat that as a clear restriction when considering that operator; it is not permission to try with your own mask.

Dragonbay Cruises, meanwhile, lists snorkelling and associated equipment on its general fact sheet for operations in Halong and Lan Ha bays. That is an advertised facility and activity, not confirmation of a supervised session on a particular day trip.

These pages do not establish a single current rule covering every boat and location across the region. Do not turn either statement into a blanket claim that snorkelling is always available or universally banned. Ask the provider of your proposed excursion to confirm its current operating arrangements for the named site.

Our Halong, Lan Ha and Bai Tu Long comparison explains why the bay name alone does not identify your boarding point or included activities. Permission to swim also needs to be distinguished from permission to snorkel or scuba dive.

Does the actual itinerary include snorkelling?

Read the timed programme and inclusions, not just a search result or page address. Cat Ba Kayak Adventures has a page whose address and FAQ heading mention snorkelling, while its displayed full-day itinerary describes kayaking and swimming. Its included-equipment list identifies kayaking gear. Those details do not confirm a snorkelling session or mask and snorkel provision.

Ask these questions together:

  • Activity and location: is there an actual guided snorkelling session, or only time to swim? At which named stop, and is it currently permitted there?
  • Equipment and participation: are masks, snorkels and the required flotation equipment supplied? What swimming ability, age or size conditions apply to each participant?
  • Getting in and out: do you enter from a beach or boat, and how do you get back aboard? Anyone needing assistance should have that arrangement confirmed before booking.
  • If it cannot operate: what replaces the activity, and what happens to any separately paid charge? Ask how conditions or poor visibility affect the decision to proceed.

Do not count on seeing coral, particular fish or clear underwater views because a promotional picture shows them. Bringing personal equipment does not establish permission, supervision or suitability. A family should also agree where non-participants remain and which adult stays with a child.

What if you wear contact lenses?

Plan your vision needs before the water activity. The CDC advises removing contact lenses before swimming and keeping lenses away from water. Do not treat putting a snorkelling mask over your contacts as a reason to disregard that advice.

Ask your eye-care professional about suitable vision correction for the activity before travelling. If you need a prescription mask, establish how you will obtain suitable equipment; do not assume the excursion boat supplies it. Bring your glasses for the rest of the shore day so removing your lenses does not leave you unable to see comfortably.

If water reaches your lenses, the CDC advises removing them as soon as possible, then discarding them or cleaning and disinfecting them overnight before reuse. Wash your hands before handling lenses, use the correct lens solution and never rinse or store them in water.

For a red or irritated eye, worsening eye pain, light sensitivity or sudden blurred vision, CDC guidance calls for immediate contact with an eye doctor and removal of contact lenses. Tell your guide or boat crew so the sightseeing plan can be changed to obtain care; do not wait until the port call ends.

Does the departure fit a Halong port call?

The Cat Ba Kayak Adventures programme above starts with an 08:00 pickup in Cat Ba Town and a 17:00 return to Cat Ba Town. Those published times refer to its island-based programme, not pickup and return at Halong International Cruise Port. The operator mentions earlier or later arrangements on request; that still requires an agreed itinerary.

For a passenger docking in Halong, reaching a Cat Ba meeting point and returning to the ocean ship are additional journeys. Do not compare a 17:00 finish in Cat Ba directly with your ship’s all-aboard time. Check the full transfer plan before deciding whether that departure is realistic.

A private arrangement can offer flexibility by agreement, but does not remove travel time, operating restrictions or the ship’s deadline. Allow for briefing, entering and leaving the water, changing and regrouping within the excursion plan. Skipping a water activity on a shared boat does not automatically provide an earlier return.

If snorkelling cannot be confirmed, choose a bay outing for its scenery and confirmed activities, or consider a nearby mainland beach visit if a seaside break is your real priority. A beach visit is an alternative experience, not a substitute promise of snorkelling.

Send Halong Shore Excursion your ship and arrival date, port times and the exact activity you want. Include the proposed boat programme if you have one. The useful recommendation is the complete excursion that fits your call, with a confirmed activity and an acceptable fallback.
