A ferry trip to Cat Ba can work only if the confirmed crossings, island transport and sightseeing all fit your cruise call. The Tuan Chau ferry lands at Gia Luan; it does not deliver you to Cat Ba town or bring you back to your ocean ship. For a short call, Halong Shore Excursion recommends an outing with fewer connections unless Cat Ba is a specific priority and the complete return plan has been checked.
Start by deciding what you want on Cat Ba: time in town, a particular island attraction or a Lan Ha Bay boat trip. These require different onward arrangements. A ferry ticket covers a crossing, so it is only one part of the decision.
Two Cat Ba ferry routes: which one is in your plan?
| Crossing | Island landing | What it means from Halong |
|---|---|---|
| Tuan Chau–Gia Luan | Gia Luan, northern Cat Ba | Reach the Tuan Chau ferry terminal from the cruise port, cross, then continue by road on Cat Ba. |
| Dong Bai–Cai Vieng | Cai Vieng, on the Cat Hai-facing side of Cat Ba | Use a different road approach to Dong Bai on Cat Hai and arrange the onward island journey from Cai Vieng. |
A timetable for Dong Bai is not the timetable for Tuan Chau. The two services do not share a mainland terminal or an island landing. Put both terminal names into the transport plan before comparing crossing times or treating one service as a fallback.
The sections below first explain the direct Tuan Chau–Gia Luan option. The separate Dong Bai timetable and return decision follow afterwards.
Where do you board, and where does the ferry take you?
The Tuan Chau–Gia Luan ferry connects Tuan Chau Island with Cat Ba Island and carries foot passengers and vehicles. Halong International Cruise Port in Bai Chay is a separate departure point. If that is where your ocean ship calls, arrange the journey to the ferry first.
Give your driver the confirmed Tuan Chau ferry terminal for Gia Luan, including its ticket counter or meeting pin. A sightseeing-cruise lounge at Tuan Chau may be the wrong destination. Our guide to reaching Tuan Chau from the cruise port explains the separate landside transfer; ask for an estimate to the ferry itself.
Gia Luan is your arrival point on Cat Ba, followed by onward travel to your chosen destination. Arrange that travel before crossing, including the journey back to Gia Luan. Do not leave the return dependent on finding a vehicle when your sightseeing finishes.
How much time does the whole journey take?
Tuan Chau Group’s ferry information gives an estimated crossing time of about 50 minutes each way. Two crossings therefore account for roughly 100 minutes on the water alone. That calculation excludes waiting, loading, disembarking, every road transfer and the visit itself.
Put the day together in this order:
- Get clearance to leave your ocean ship, reach the agreed pickup point and drive to Tuan Chau’s ferry terminal.
- Complete ticketing and boarding, wait for the confirmed departure and cross to Gia Luan.
- Disembark, meet your island transport and travel to the activity.
- Finish sightseeing early enough for the drive back, ferry check-in and the return crossing.
- Leave the ferry at Tuan Chau, meet your driver, return to the cruise port and complete the route back aboard.
A scheduled ship arrival does not mean you can catch a ferry departing shortly afterwards. Equally, a ferry arriving at Tuan Chau before your ship’s all-aboard time may still be too late once the remaining journey is included.
Which ferry departure is safe for your return?
Your latest usable return ferry must reach Tuan Chau early enough for unloading, the road transfer, port entry and boarding before all aboard, with an allowance for delays. Work backward from your agreed landside return target using the cruise-port buffer guide. Then work backward again to decide when you must leave the island attraction.
Check departures for your actual date and both directions. The ferry operator says schedules can change with demand and weather. Its June 2026 travel notice describes summer arrangements ending on 5 September and departures subject to a minimum passenger count. A summer timetable found online is not confirmation of an autumn or winter sailing.
Ask whether your intended return is confirmed to operate, when passengers and vehicles must report, and what happens if it is delayed or full. A return ticket alone does not answer those questions. For a same-day sailing, choose a plan with a usable fallback; if the next possible crossing would miss your deadline, the itinerary has little tolerance for disruption.
Dong Bai–Cai Vieng: the published late-2026 timetable
Checked 11 October 2026: Bayview Cat Ba’s notice dated 26 August applies from 1 September to 31 December 2026. It sets out regular departures with roughly 30–40-minute spacing and allows the terminal managers to adjust service to conditions.
Read the direction correctly. The operator’s table lists the last scheduled departure from Cai Vieng, the Cat Ba Island side, at 17:30; 18:00 appears in the Dong Bai column. The notice also allows operation to extend to 19:00 depending on weather and demand. That possible extension is not a promised return sailing.
For a passenger returning to an ocean ship in Halong, the relevant sequence is island attraction → Cai Vieng → ferry → Dong Bai → road transfer to Halong → port entry and reboarding. A 17:30 island departure may be much too late for your ship. Work backward from your ship’s all-aboard deadline and choose an earlier usable crossing with room for a missed departure or a loading queue.
A 30–40-minute service interval is not a maximum waiting-time guarantee. Vehicle capacity, loading and disruption can affect the queue. Confirm the day’s departure and vehicle arrangements before setting out, and obtain the next timetable for journeys after 31 December.
Do the summer vehicle restrictions still apply?
Hai Phong’s April 2026 notice restricted cars and trucks travelling outward from Dong Bai during specified holiday periods and weekend hours, with the stated seasonal period ending on 30 September 2026. That notice alone does not establish an October restriction or permanent ban. Check any replacement traffic notice for your date and vehicle; walking passengers and different vehicle categories should not be treated as interchangeable.
Does taking a car solve the connections?
A vehicle travelling with you can simplify the island journey, provided the booking covers both ferry crossings, the driver and your complete return to the cruise port. Confirm vehicle space and boarding arrangements in both directions. A private car does not control a public ferry’s departure or remove the loading queue.
If you cross on foot, record the driver meetings for your chosen route. For Tuan Chau–Gia Luan, meet the island driver at Gia Luan and the mainland driver at Tuan Chau on return. For Dong Bai–Cai Vieng, the corresponding meetings are Cai Vieng on arrival and Dong Bai on return. Save the contact details and meeting instructions offline. Ask for the full transport and ticket cost before comparing it with a coordinated excursion.
For wheelchair users or guests who find steps difficult, confirm the route from vehicle or quay to the passenger area, seating and toilet access on the actual ferry. Carrying cars does not establish that every passenger facility is accessible. Check the island vehicle and chosen attraction as well.
What if the ship is late or the ferry cannot run?
Recalculate the whole day before leaving Halong. A later outbound ferry usually leaves less sightseeing time and may remove the return you needed. Shorten or change the outing while you still have a practical choice, rather than hoping to recover the time by driving faster.
Cat Ba’s cable car runs between Cat Hai and Phu Long. It is a different connection and does not return you directly to Tuan Chau. The Cat Ba cable-car guide gives the current operating windows and Tuesday closure. Using it as a backup requires separate road transport on both sides and confirmation that it is operating. Do not count it as an instant replacement for a cancelled ferry.
If your main wish is scenery on Lan Ha Bay, compare a confirmed boat excursion before adding a ferry trip to Cat Ba town. The three-bay comparison explains why the actual boarding port and stops matter. A local Halong outing may be more practical when connections are uncertain.
Send Halong Shore Excursion your ship, arrival date, latest arrival and all-aboard details, and the specific Cat Ba experience you want. Start with your ship and arrival date, then request an assessment of the complete itinerary. Island access, available transport and excursion suitability still need confirmation before booking.
