The simplest place to get coffee during a Halong port call is the Halong International Cruise Port terminal area, after you know your meeting point and available time. Starbucks Cảng Quốc Tế Hạ Long and Coffeecherry Hạ Long are currently listed by their own official sources at the international port. Check that the outlet is open and on your permitted passenger route before leaving the meeting area.
A café name alone does not solve the port-call decision. You need enough time to leave the ship, reach the passenger terminal, order, pay and return to the exact guide or driver location. Halong Shore Excursion recommends treating coffee as a flexible pause inside that chain, not as a reason to make an excursion depart late.

Which coffee outlets are verified in the port area?
| Outlet | What is verified | What to check on the day |
|---|---|---|
| Starbucks Cảng Quốc Tế Hạ Long | Starbucks Vietnam’s official locator lists the branch at Halong International Cruise Port. On 14 September 2026 it showed 07:00–18:30 daily. | Same-day hours, current queue, menu availability and whether it lies on your route to the meeting point |
| Coffeecherry Hạ Long | Coffeecherry’s official company site lists a café at the international cruise port, and the port’s official diagram labels Coffee Cherry. | Whether it is open for your call, current menu, price, seating and preparation time |
| Other counter shown on a map or sign | A port diagram may help you identify the area. | A map label does not confirm current operation. Check the open entrance and counter before relying on it. |
Use the full Starbucks branch name. Starbucks also lists another Ha Long branch, and a search result can lead a driver to the wrong part of the city. For Coffeecherry, no reliable current hours were found, so do not build the morning plan around an assumed opening.
Opening hours can change for holidays, maintenance or local operations. A chain’s normal hours are also different from your ship’s passenger-release time. If your ship docks before the listed opening, wait for current confirmation or plan coffee later.
How far is the café from the ship?
There is no responsible universal walking time from your cabin or gangway to a port café. The vessel’s position, gangway, security route, mobility assistance and passenger flow all come first. A terminal-area café may still be several operational steps away after you leave the ship.
Use the ship-to-Main-Lobby distance guide to separate the vessel-to-terminal stage from the café visit. If anyone uses a wheelchair, also check the wheelchair route from ship to Main Lobby. Do not promise the guide a café meeting before you know how the ship will release passengers.
Keep coffee separate from the excursion meeting point
The café is not automatically the pickup point. A booking may name the Main Lobby, a tour counter, a terminal exit, a flagpole or another visible landmark. Read the confirmation before joining a queue or sitting down.
When you meet the representative first, ask whether there is time for coffee and where the group will reassemble. If you go to the café before meeting, keep your phone connected and stay inside the route agreed in writing. Do not expect a driver outside the controlled terminal area to park, enter and search every café.
Set a personal “leave the counter” time earlier than the vehicle departure. It must include collecting the drink, reaching the meeting point and finding the right person. A takeaway order is not instant when several passengers order at once.
How do you order the coffee you expect?
Vietnamese café recipes vary by venue. Use the terms below to start the conversation, then confirm milk, sweetness, ice and size before paying:
- Cà phê đen: black coffee. Add không đường if you want no sugar; “black” does not always mean unsweetened.
- Cà phê sữa đá: iced coffee commonly made with sweetened condensed milk. It is not simply black coffee with a small amount of fresh milk.
- Bạc xỉu, if listed: usually a sweeter, milk-forward option with a gentler coffee taste than cà phê sữa đá. It still contains coffee; the name describes the style of drink, not a decaffeinated option.
- Nóng / đá: hot / iced.
- Ít đường / không đường: less sugar / no sugar. Ask whether the base is already sweetened.
- Sữa đặc / sữa tươi: condensed milk / fresh milk. These create different taste and sweetness.
A traditional phin is a small metal filter that drips into the cup. It can take longer than a machine-made drink. When pickup is close, show the staff the time you must leave and ask which item can be completed before then. If the answer is uncertain, choose a bottled drink or skip the order.
Should you try egg coffee before an excursion?
Egg coffee, or cà phê trứng, may use a whipped egg mixture, often with sweetened dairy ingredients. Availability at the two port outlets is not confirmed here. Ask for the current recipe because “egg coffee” does not establish whether the egg is pasteurized or fully cooked, which milk is used, or whether ingredients share equipment with allergens.
Current CDC and FDA food-safety guidance treats raw or undercooked eggs as a higher-risk choice and recommends pasteurized egg products in drinks that will not be thoroughly cooked. A hot coffee base does not prove that a topping reached a safe temperature. If staff cannot answer and you need to avoid raw egg, choose another drink.
Tell staff about egg, dairy, nut or other serious allergies before ordering, and ask about shared whisks, blenders and work surfaces. “No topping” may not remove cross-contact. Passengers who are pregnant, older, very young or immunocompromised may prefer the simpler fully prepared drink when ingredients cannot be confirmed.
Cash, card, receipt and language
Check the displayed price and currency before confirming the order. Ask whether the exact counter accepts your card or QR method; payment options can differ even inside the same terminal. Carry a small amount of Vietnamese dong as a backup rather than relying on foreign cash being accepted or changed at a favourable rate.
The Halong card-versus-cash guide covers card prompts, receipts and backup money. Keep the receipt until you have checked the number of drinks and any food. If a card terminal offers conversion to your home currency, read the amount and exchange-rate choice instead of pressing the first green button.
Pointing to the menu and repeating hot or iced often solves a simple order. For allergies or ingredient restrictions, use a written translation that names the ingredient and the consequence clearly. Do not rely on “vegetarian” to explain an egg or dairy allergy.
Can you sit, use Wi-Fi, charge a phone or use a toilet?
Ask for the facility you need before ordering. A café at an international terminal does not guarantee a free seat, customer toilet, power socket or working Wi-Fi. Some facilities may belong to the port rather than the café, and access can depend on the passenger area.
Never make the excursion contact dependent on café Wi-Fi. Save the guide’s phone number, booking screenshot, ship name and meeting point before leaving the vessel. The Halong cruise-port Wi-Fi guide explains why a visible network name is not the same as a working connection.
If you charge a phone, keep the device and cable with you and set an alarm for the leave time. If you need a toilet, ask where it is and whether you must retain a receipt or access code. Do not leave a bag at the table to mark your seat.
Takeaway or a longer café outing?
Choose takeaway when the group is assembled, the vehicle is near or you have only a short wait. Check that the lid is secure and ask whether the vehicle or boat permits open drinks. Hot liquid, steps and a moving gangway are a poor combination; finish the drink or carry it in a stable bag when required.
Choose a seated port-area break when you have already met the representative, the café is open and everyone knows the departure time. Keep luggage and mobility aids clear of the passenger route.
A café outside the port is a separate shore outing. First use the Bai Chay walking guide for cruise passengers. Select one exact venue, verify that it is open, and count the journey out, ordering, seating, payment and complete return. A map’s straight-line distance does not account for controlled exits, road crossings, heat or finding the correct terminal entrance again.
What if the ship is late or the café is closed?
If disembarkation starts late, protect the excursion. Tell the guide you still want coffee and ask whether it can fit at a later stop. Do not disappear into a queue while the group is deciding how to shorten the day.
If the planned counter is closed, use a simple fallback: check the second verified port-area outlet, buy a sealed drink if available, or leave with the excursion and stop only where the itinerary safely allows. Travelling across Bai Chay to find a particular coffee is rarely the best use of a reduced port-call window.
Send Halong Shore Excursion your Ship + Arrival Date and ask which meeting point applies to your call. Once the ship route, café location and vehicle time are clear, coffee can remain what it should be: a convenient break that does not weaken the return plan.
