Credit Card or Cash in Halong: What Should Cruise Guests Use?

Take a payment card prepared for overseas use and usable Vietnamese dong (VND) for a Halong port day. Pay by card where your card and the merchant’s system are supported; use cash for cash-only purchases and a practical return fallback. Keep the backup separately so one lost wallet, flat phone or declined transaction does not disable both methods.

Halong Shore Excursion recommends confirming how you will pay before ordering, entering a paid activity or starting a ride.

Match the payment method to the purchase

Situation First choice Backup to prepare
Restaurant or attraction Accepted card, after checking the total and currency Second card or VND to settle the bill
Small shop, market or snack Suitable VND notes Check card or compatible QR acceptance before ordering
Street taxi Method agreed before departure Cash protected for the return
App ride Method selected in the confirmed booking Agreed alternative if that method fails
Excursion balance Currency and method in the written booking Provider-approved alternative
Emergency return Verified method that secures suitable transport Separate cash reserve and another usable card

These are planning choices, not promises of acceptance. A card logo or QR code does not establish that your particular account will work. Do not assume US dollars or euros are accepted; confirm any foreign-cash conversion and change before agreeing.

Carry smaller VND notes, read the printed denomination and count change. Use the Halong cash-budget guide for the amount; it depends on unpaid costs and what your excursion includes.

Prepare the card and its backup

Check overseas-use settings, any travel-notice requirement, purchase and withdrawal limits, PIN, foreign-transaction fees and cash-advance terms with your issuer. Establish how verification messages will reach you abroad and save the official support and card-locking channels separately from the wallet.

Bring the physical card even if you usually pay by phone. Phone payments depend on battery, connectivity, login and verification. Two cards stored with the only phone in one wallet are vulnerable to the same loss.

Choose the transaction currency deliberately

A terminal or ATM may offer to convert VND into your card’s billing currency. This is dynamic currency conversion (DCC). The familiar currency may include the provider’s exchange rate and markup.

Visa’s guidance requires a choice, with both currency amounts, the rate and additional charges disclosed. The merchant should not choose for you. Selecting VND normally leaves conversion to the card network and issuer; your issuer’s fees can still apply. Compare a home-currency offer before accepting it.

Before approval, check the merchant, digits, currency, disclosed surcharge and any tip field against the agreed bill. Enter your PIN discreetly. Do not disclose a PIN, banking password or one-time verification code to a seller or someone offering payment help.

If payment fails, establish the result before retrying

Ask whether the terminal shows a decline, connection error, cancellation or approval. A failed-looking screen does not explain the bank’s status. Keep the receipt and check your account notification rather than repeatedly presenting the card.

A decline can involve issuer security, limits, overseas settings or terminal connectivity; it does not by itself establish insufficient funds or merchant misconduct. If the bill still needs settling, agree the backup method and obtain a receipt recording what was paid.

A pending authorization is not the same as a completed charge. It can reduce available credit while processing, and its amount may change or disappear. Two entries therefore do not automatically prove two completed payments. A reversal is another status; ask your issuer how it classifies each entry.

Keep the merchant, date, original VND amount, payment receipts and cancellation record. If two charges post for one purchase, contact the merchant and issuer with that evidence. Follow your issuer’s dispute process and timing. Report an unauthorized charge promptly through the issuer’s official channel, even if it remains pending.

Use QR only when your own wallet supports it

Some international payment arrangements work at participating Vietnamese merchants, but compatibility depends on the wallet, bank, network and merchant. In your trusted app, verify the recipient, amount and currency before approving. Avoid replacement codes supplied by an unknown person.

The Halong QR-payment guide covers current compatibility checks. Keep a physical alternative rather than treating a displayed QR code as a guarantee.

ATM withdrawals and cash exchange are separate transactions

An ATM withdrawal can involve operator, issuer, conversion or cash-advance costs. Check the screen before approval, shield the PIN and retrieve card and cash. A machine cannot necessarily solve a blocked-card problem. The ATM guide near Halong Cruise Port covers the practical checks.

Exchanging banknotes uses a separate cash rate. Confirm the fees and amount received, count the notes and keep the receipt. Foreign notes may be refused because of condition. Use the Halong money-exchange guide; avoid spending excursion time searching for a marginally better rate.

Agree group payments, deposits and balances in advance

Splitting a bill: ask before ordering whether the cashier can split by person, item or card. Record the shares and amounts paid. If one guest pays by card and others reimburse in cash, agree the conversion between yourselves.

Deposits and holds: establish whether the transaction is a final charge, refundable deposit or temporary authorization, and how release works. A hold can reduce spending capacity even before a charge posts; preserve another way to pay for the return.

Excursion balances: confirm amount, currency, due time and recipient. Verify a changed bank account, payment link or collector through the original booking channel. Keep written proof of payment.

Voluntary tips: these are separate from the quoted balance. The Halong tipping guide helps distinguish guide, driver and crew roles.

Keep payment problems inside the return plan

Protect return funds from shopping. If a wallet or card is lost, use the issuer’s saved official channel to lock or report it; ignore unsolicited “payment help” links. Keep ship documents separately where the ship’s instructions allow.

Tell the guide promptly about an unresolved payment. Secure receipts and contact details for follow-up, and leave at the planned time. Halong Shore Excursion can clarify your booked payment arrangements using your ship name, arrival date and confirmation.
