A cruise-line shore excursion credit is not a general voucher for any tour you find in Halong. For the programmes below, check the benefit attached to your reservation and the cruise line’s redemption process. Treat an excursion booked directly with a local operator as a separate purchase unless the cruise line explicitly confirms an eligible arrangement.
The useful question is whether using the benefit in Halong gives you the day you want. Some programmes provide a voyage-wide balance; others attach a benefit to a particular port or eligible guest. Establish that difference before comparing a ship excursion with an independent booking.
Halong Shore Excursion recommends comparing those two complete plans before paying. This guide covers Holland America Line’s Have It All, Princess Premier, Oceania’s Your World Included and Norwegian’s Free at Sea benefits. It does not determine the entitlement on an individual booking.

Read the benefit name on your reservation first
Find your booking confirmation and the benefits shown in your cruise account. Record the exact programme, eligible passenger names, remaining balance, currency, voyage and any purchase-date conditions. Keep these three things separate:
- Excursion credit: an allowance with rules about qualifying excursion purchases.
- General onboard or shipboard credit: a different balance whose permitted uses and refund rules depend on its source.
- An included excursion: an entitlement to a particular included experience, which still needs the appropriate reservation process.
A package label, an agent’s promotional summary and a friend’s experience on an earlier cruise are not enough to establish your remaining benefit. If the balance is missing, ask the cruise line or your booking agent to identify it before cancelling or repurchasing anything.
Four programmes that should not be treated the same
Holland America, Princess and Oceania information checked on 21 September 2026; Norwegian information checked on 11 October 2026. Your booking’s applicable terms and confirmed benefit take priority.
| Programme | What to check | Why it changes your Halong decision |
|---|---|---|
| Holland America Line: Have It All | Credit is per eligible guest, not per cabin. Published standard terms restrict the fare amenities to the first two guests and make the excursion benefit non-transferable and non-refundable. | Do not pool everyone’s allowance without confirmation. The excursion credit cannot become cash or pay for airport transfers, shuttles or non-excursion items. |
| Princess: Premier | Confirm which Premier version you purchased. The current comparison includes excursion credit under Premier, not Plus. | For a 2026 sailing, Princess distinguishes packages bought before 22 July 2025 from those bought on or after that date. A 2026 sailing alone does not establish entitlement to the newer benefit. |
| Oceania: Your World Included | For bookings made from 17 September 2025, the published choice is wine and beer or excursion credit, selected by final payment. Cabin companions must make the same choice; third and fourth guests are excluded. | The allowance is generally per stateroom, with specified solo-booking exceptions. Under these terms, unused excursion credit can become shipboard credit on the same voyage. |
| Norwegian: Free at Sea | Identify Guest 1 and the applicable booking terms, including whether the benefit is expressed per port or per tour. | Do not double a single guest’s credit or assume Plus adds a second guest’s allowance. |
Princess’s applicable Premier excursion credit can be redeemed before sailing or at the onboard excursion desk. Unused credit is limited to that voyage, is non-refundable and cannot be exchanged for cash. Oceania’s stated shipboard-credit option is a material difference: do not apply an old “use it on an excursion or lose it immediately” explanation to every current booking.
Check the current Holland America Have It All terms, Princess package details or Oceania booking-benefit terms for the programme on your reservation. These are benefit references, not recommendations to purchase a package.
Norwegian: check Guest 1 and the version of Free at Sea
Do not subtract two US$50 discounts from a couple’s Halong tour simply because both passengers have Free at Sea. NCL’s published terms for the booking window beginning 26 August 2026 allocate the excursion credit to Guest 1 only. This version excludes bookings through its UK, Germany/CE and MEA offices. They describe US$50 per port, usable against one or multiple eligible, non-overlapping excursions, rather than a fresh US$50 for every outing. Verify which terms apply to your booking date and booking market before planning a morning and afternoon tour around repeated credits.
Those terms exclude transfers, shuttles and “on your own” experiences. An excursion appearing in the ship’s catalogue does not automatically make it eligible. Redemption is through NCL’s booking channels; a direct payment to Halong Shore Excursion is a separate purchase.
Be careful with older package comparisons. NCL’s February 2026 Free at Sea Plus flyer gives Plus the same excursion-credit benefit as Free at Sea. Earlier official Plus flyers advertised an additional Guest 2 credit. The February flyer also uses “per tour” wording, unlike the later terms above. Identify your booking’s version and obtain clarification of any mismatch before relying on either description.
Illustration only: if the same tour costs US$150 per person and only Guest 1 has a confirmed US$50 benefit, the couple pays US$250 before any separately confirmed discounts: US$100 for Guest 1 plus US$150 for Guest 2. It is not US$200. These are example prices, not a Halong quote.
For an overnight Halong call, confirm how the benefit treats the two shore days. Two dates on the itinerary do not establish a second allowance.
Per guest and per cabin are different calculations
Start with the benefit actually available to each eligible person or cabin, then subtract what has already been committed to other bookings. A headline allowance for the voyage is not necessarily the balance available for Halong.
Illustration only: two guests with US$200 each have a combined US$400 allowance if both are eligible and both balances remain available. A US$200 allowance per cabin totals US$200, not US$400. Neither calculation proves that one guest can use the other’s balance.
For a private group quote, compare the total for the same people. Do not compare a cabin’s credit against one person’s ship-tour price. Our guide to comparing the full excursion cost covers the separate question of matching inclusions and pricing units.
Compare the whole voyage, not just the Halong checkout
A credit has practical value when it offsets something you would otherwise pay for and actually want. Choosing an unsuitable excursion simply to consume a benefit can still be a poor use of your port day.
The comparison below applies to a voyage-wide balance that can be spent on eligible excursions at different ports. A port-specific benefit is not a pot of money you can move from an unused Halong outing to another destination. Do not use the same calculation for both.
Consider this hypothetical two-person comparison. The ship’s Halong excursion costs US$520 for the pair, a suitable independent alternative costs US$380, and the couple has US$400 of eligible unused excursion credit. These are invented figures to explain the calculation, not prices or package entitlements.
| Situation | Ship excursion option | Independent Halong option |
|---|---|---|
| No other wanted, eligible use for the credit | US$120 extra to pay after applying US$400. | US$380 extra to pay; the restricted credit has no alternative value in this example. |
| Another wanted excursion costs US$400 and can use the same credit | US$120 for Halong plus US$400 for the other port: US$520 extra in total. | US$380 for Halong plus zero for the other port after credit: US$380 extra in total. |
The second case assumes all credit can be applied as shown and the other excursion is available. Confirm that before relying on the calculation. If your specific benefit can pay for other wanted onboard purchases, compare that use too. Never count the same credit twice.
Check deadlines before changing an existing reservation
Keep three dates separate: the deadline for selecting a benefit, the deadline for reserving an excursion with it, and the cancellation deadline for a tour you already hold. A credit balance does not override a cancellation penalty.
For Oceania, settle excursion choices at least 14 days before sailing where possible. Its general terms state that timing as a requirement, while some promotional terms describe it as a recommendation. Confirm the rule attached to your booking, especially if departure is closer; do not assume that onboard availability settles the eligibility question.
- Ask how much of an existing tour was paid with credit and how much with money.
- Get the applicable cancellation deadline and the destination of each refunded component.
- If a benefit has not applied correctly, ask whether the line can correct it without releasing your excursion place.
- Confirm the independent alternative’s availability and its own terms before committing to a switch.
- Retain the cancellation confirmation and check the restored balance; an enquiry or a cancelled calendar reminder is not cancellation of a paid booking.
Choose the Halong day after checking the benefit
Keeping a suitable cruise-line excursion can be the best decision when its experience, pace and remaining cost work for you. A private arrangement may be worth paying for when your party needs a different route, pace or use of the available shore time. The credit alone cannot establish which tour fits.
Use Ship + Arrival Date to start checking your Halong call. Send Halong Shore Excursion your ship, arrival date, party size and preferred experience for a separately priced option. Compare the confirmed plan with your cruise-line booking before changing either reservation; sending a request does not confirm availability.
