Use an authorised bank or foreign-currency exchange agent to change foreign banknotes into Vietnamese dong (VND) near Halong Cruise Port, and confirm the actual cash service before travelling. The port publicly lists an ATM; that does not establish a staffed exchange counter inside the terminal or availability during your call.
Halong Shore Excursion recommends comparing the final VND payout with the time and transport needed to obtain it. A slightly better rate can lose its value after a separate taxi journey and a queue.
Do you need to exchange notes, withdraw cash or pay by card?
Cash exchange means handing over foreign banknotes for VND. An ATM withdrawal draws money from an eligible card account; it does not exchange the notes in your wallet. A card purchase pays a particular seller, and that seller’s acceptance does not establish acceptance elsewhere.
Check the excursion inclusions and every unpaid balance first. If essential costs and return transport are already covered, the remaining cash may be only for optional purchases. Use the Vietnamese-dong guide for Halong to identify the need before adding an exchange stop.
Confirm the counter, currency and documents before taking a taxi
Ask identifiable port information staff for the current provider and exact location. “There is a bank nearby” does not establish that its counter buys foreign cash today. An old map pin also cannot confirm opening hours or service.
| Check | Question to settle before travelling |
|---|---|
| Cash service | Will this counter buy your physical currency and pay VND? |
| Visit time | Will the service operate when you arrive, allowing for lunch breaks, weekends, holidays and transaction time? |
| Your notes | Are the denomination, design or series, and condition acceptable? |
| Identification | Which original document does the counter require? |
| Access and return | Can you reach the counter, wait comfortably and meet your return vehicle at an agreed place? |
If the ship retains your passport, explain this to the provider and follow ship instructions. Do not assume a phone photograph, photocopy or ship card is accepted instead. For limited mobility, check the vehicle-to-counter distance, steps and seating, not just road distance.
Carry clean, undamaged notes and avoid relying on one large bill. Acceptance remains the selected provider’s decision. Do not tape, mark or attempt to repair a doubtful note before presenting it. The USD-note guide for Halong cruise passengers explains design, denomination and condition in more detail.
Use an identifiable authorised provider
At a foreign-exchange agent, look for the agent’s name, its authorising credit institution, a publicly displayed cash-buying rate and a customer invoice. Vietnam’s exchange-agent rules require transactions at the displayed rate and a copy of the invoice for the customer.
These checks concern a formal transaction, not a spoken offer from a street intermediary. Do not hand money to someone who proposes taking it elsewhere, cannot identify the authorised counter or cannot provide its transaction record. A driver recommending a provider does not establish that provider’s authority.
Read the cash-buying column and the final payout
When you sell foreign banknotes to the counter, the counter is buying your cash. Vietnamese bank rate boards distinguish:
| Rate-board wording | Meaning for your exchange |
|---|---|
| Mua tiền mặt | Cash buying: the relevant starting column when handing over foreign banknotes for VND. |
| Mua chuyển khoản | Transfer buying: not the cash-banknote rate. |
| Bán | Selling: the provider sells foreign currency; not your banknote-to-VND transaction. |
Confirm the rate for the exact currency and accepted notes, any separate charge, and the final VND amount before proceeding. An online reference rate is not the completed counter quote. Compare the payout for the same foreign amount rather than comparing unrelated rate columns.
Count, check and resolve differences at the counter
- State the currency and amount you want to exchange; identify any notes the cashier will not accept.
- Agree the cash-buying rate, disclosed charges and final payout before completing the exchange.
- Watch the count, then count the VND yourself. Read all the zeros and request useful smaller denominations if available.
- Match the receipt to the currency, accepted foreign amount, rate and VND received.
- Put the cash and receipt away, keeping return-transport money separate from optional spending.
If the payout differs from the quote, pause and ask the cashier to explain the rate, charges and arithmetic. Resolve the difference there and retain the record. If you decline an uncompleted exchange, recount the original notes returned to you.
A formal counterfeit concern is different from an ordinary refusal over note condition. Follow the provider’s documented process; do not try to spend or exchange a suspected counterfeit elsewhere.
Set a cutoff for the errand and keep a backup
Allow for finding transport, both journeys, locating the entrance, waiting, identification and counting, plus the complete port-to-ship return. Tell your guide before making a detour and agree when you must leave the counter. Heat, rain, traffic or a late passenger release may make optional exchange less worthwhile.
If the counter cannot help or the queue threatens that cutoff, use an already confirmed payment method, reduce optional spending or skip the purchase. If card withdrawal suits the problem, use the ATM guide for Halong Cruise Port. Do not spend the protected return time searching from counter to counter or use the transport reserve to chase a better rate.
For Halong Shore Excursion, send your Ship + Arrival Date and clarify any unpaid costs before the call. A useful exchange supplies the cash the agreed day requires while leaving the meeting and ship return intact.
