Choose a four-hour Halong Bay boat trip for a more compact sightseeing route; choose a six-hour trip when its named stops are the experiences you want and the complete excursion fits your ship. The difference is usually more than two extra hours aboard. For Halong Shore Excursion’s private options, the shorter programme visits the Thien Cung, Dau Go and Ba Hang area, while the longer programme visits Sung Sot, Luon Cave and Ti Top Island.
Neither duration means you can leave your ocean ship and be back aboard exactly four or six hours later. First identify what the advertised clock includes. Then compare the routes, the activities you will actually join and the return to your ship.
What changes between the two routes?
The comparison below describes the current private programmes offered by Halong Shore Excursion. Other operators may use the same duration labels for different itineraries.
| Decision | Four-hour private option | Six-hour private option |
|---|---|---|
| Main sightseeing area | Thien Cung and Dau Go caves, Ba Hang and named limestone islets | Sung Sot Cave, Luon Cave and Ti Top Island |
| Cave experience | Walked cave visits; verify whether your agreed plan includes one cave or both | A walked visit at Sung Sot; Luon is a separate small-boat or kayak activity |
| Water-level activity | Kayak or rowed boat at Ba Hang when included and operating | Kayak or rowed boat at Luon when included and operating |
| Beach or viewpoint priority | Ti Top is not part of this published programme | Ti Top offers a separate choice between the beach area and the viewpoint climb |
| Main reason to choose it | You want limestone scenery and a compact route, or need to preserve more of the shore window | Sung Sot, Luon or Ti Top is a priority and you have enough usable time |
The official bay route framework places the first group of sights on VHL1 and Sung Sot, Luon and Ti Top on VHL2. A route’s full attraction list is not a promise that one sailing visits every place on it. Your booking needs a shorter, specific list of actual stops.

Does “six hours” include the port transfer?
Do not assume so. The current private six-hour service describes approximately six hours of cruising, followed by the driver’s return transfer. The private four-hour service describes approximately 3.5–4 hours of cruising, also with road transfers around it. The booking confirmation must separately state the time at the meeting point and the planned time back at the passenger drop-off.
For these Tuan Chau departures, your day includes leaving the ocean ship, reaching the guide, travelling to the local harbour, checking in, boarding, completing the boat programme, disembarking and travelling back. Port entry and the final movement to the ocean-ship gangway still follow. The Tuan Chau transfer guide explains why the two ports must be named separately.
Some shared boats use domestic berths within Halong International Cruise Port. That can change the transfer arrangement, but it does not remove check-in, boarding or the route back through the port. Compare pickup-to-return times for both options, not one operator’s sailing time against another operator’s total tour time.
If the ship itself is scheduled in Halong for six hours, a six-hour local cruise cannot occupy that entire window. Use the separate guide to a six-hour port call; it answers how much shore time is available rather than which boat duration to buy.
Choose the experience you would regret missing
If Ti Top’s panorama is the reason you are visiting: start with the longer route that actually includes Ti Top, then check whether the viewpoint climb suits you. A photograph of the island in a general bay brochure does not put it on a shorter itinerary.
If you want a cave and limestone views: the shorter programme may meet that goal. Thien Cung and Dau Go are different from Sung Sot; four hours does not mean seeing a reduced version of the same cave. The Sung Sot versus Thien Cung comparison helps with that choice.
If you want kayaking: look at the place, permitted activity and transfer, not only the trip length. Both published private programmes include a water-level option, but Ba Hang and Luon are different locations. Agree the alternative if the activity cannot operate or a passenger decides against it.
If you mainly want to sit and watch the islands: ask how much of each programme is spent moving through the landscape and how much is spent waiting during landings. A longer trip is not automatically two extra hours of uninterrupted scenic sailing. The scenery-only cruise guide is the better next step.
A shorter cruise is not automatically easier on the knees
The four-hour programme can include two walked caves. The six-hour programme can combine a cave, a small-boat transfer and an optional viewpoint climb. Judge the activities you will do, rather than treating either duration as a mobility rating.
Describe stairs, balance and standing limits before booking. If one person will skip a stop, confirm whether remaining aboard is permitted, which facilities stay available and who stays with them. A private boat does not by itself provide a step-free gangway or accessible toilet.
For a mixed-ability family, preserving one shared experience can work better than putting every advertised activity on the list. Cave entry, kayaking and a viewpoint climb are separate decisions; none should be added by rushing a slower passenger.
Start time can decide the route even when enough hours remain
A private start is flexible by agreement, subject to the vessel, attraction operations and the ship’s return deadline. It is not an unlimited departure window. The current six-hour private service states that pickups after noon use the four-hour route; confirm the applicable arrangement for your date.
Shared departures have their own check-in and sailing times. A six-hour boat that leaves before you can realistically reach it is not a fit, even if your ship stays late. A later departure is not suitable if its return leaves too little time to reboard your ocean ship.
If clearance is delayed, recalculate before boarding. Once a shared boat has sailed, skipping a cave does not generally give an individual passenger an earlier harbour return. A shorter approved route or a local land outing is the practical alternative when the longer sailing no longer fits.
Ask for two complete plans, then choose
Ask Halong Shore Excursion to compare the four-hour and six-hour options using the same ship details: the realistic meeting time, boarding harbour, named stops, planned local-boat return and earlier passenger drop-off target before all aboard. Include the party’s one must-do experience and any activity they will skip.
Choose the longer option when it adds an experience you value and preserves the return margin. Choose the shorter option when it already delivers your priority, allows a more manageable day or better accommodates a later release from the ship. If neither works without relying on the fastest possible transfers, choose a land plan.
Start with your Ship + Arrival Date. Halong Shore Excursion can use that call’s timing to check which route is feasible; sending a request does not itself confirm the vessel or booking.
