Can You Still Take a Seaplane Flight on a Halong Port Call?

Do not plan a Halong port call around a seaplane flight unless a licensed operator has confirmed the exact flight, date, check-in point and cancellation terms in writing. Hai Au Aviation states that its seaplane operations concluded on 1 April 2026. At our review on 14 September 2026, we found no verified operator announcement that the Halong Bay sightseeing service had resumed.

Halong International Cruise port

This matters because old price tables, bookable-looking calendars and tour pages can remain online after a service ends. They may describe a real experience from the past, but they do not prove that an aircraft will operate during your ship’s call. Halong Shore Excursion recommends choosing a confirmed alternative before you sail rather than losing limited time ashore trying to rescue an unavailable booking.

Can cruise passengers currently book the Halong seaplane?

The former Hai Au Aviation Halong sightseeing flight should be treated as unavailable. The operator’s own service archive says that seaplane operations concluded from 1 April 2026. Vietnamese news coverage published in March 2026 also recorded the company’s announcement and attributed the decision to a change in business direction.

The old experience was commonly described as an approximately 25-minute sightseeing flight over the bay. That historical duration is useful only for identifying the former product. It is not a current schedule, and it must not be inserted into a present-day shore plan.

This answer does not claim that an aviation experience could never return under a future operator or new approval. It means that a cruise passenger needs current operational evidence before committing port-call time or money. A seller’s enquiry form, an automatically advancing calendar or a recently updated web page is not the same as a confirmed operating flight.

Why do seaplane tours still appear available online?

Travel pages are often copied, syndicated or left unchanged. A page can retain old departure details while its date field advances automatically. Search results may also show cached text long after the underlying service changes. Reviews prove that earlier passengers flew; they do not prove that a flight exists on your arrival date.

Use this evidence hierarchy when assessing any claim:

  1. Written confirmation from the actual operating airline naming your date, flight, check-in location and status.
  2. A ticket or booking confirmation that identifies the operator, not merely a request receipt from a reseller.
  3. Clear cancellation and refund terms for weather, operational changes and a late ship.
  4. Current ground instructions that match the confirmed flight rather than a document from an earlier season.

If a page supplies only a price, attractive photos and a “book now” button, the operational question remains unanswered.

What should you verify before accepting any claimed replacement?

Ask the seller to identify the airline that will physically operate the aircraft. Request the flight number or operator reference, confirmed departure time, latest check-in time, departure and return points, and a contact that will answer on the day. If any of these details remain vague, do not build your excursion around the claim.

Also obtain the passenger rules that apply to your party. Ask about required identification, baggage and camera limits, any passenger-weight information the operator needs, child acceptance, mobility assistance, boarding steps and seating. These rules must come from the current operator because aircraft, approvals and procedures can differ. A historical Hai Au instruction sheet cannot establish another operator’s rules.

Finally, ask what happens if the ship arrives late, the flight is delayed, visibility deteriorates or the service is cancelled. A refund policy addresses money; it does not restore the shore time lost travelling to a departure point. Cruise passengers need both financial protection and a workable fallback.

Do not go to Tuan Chau using an old meeting-point notice

Older seaplane material associated the experience with Tuan Chau. Halong International Cruise Port is in Bai Chay, while Tuan Chau is a separate part of the city reached by road. A historical meeting point does not confirm that staff, check-in or an aircraft will be there.

Do not leave the cruise port for Tuan Chau merely to investigate. First obtain written confirmation and compare the actual check-in point with the place where your ship releases passengers. Include the drive in both directions, possible traffic, check-in time and a protected return margin. The advertised minutes in the air were never the total ship-to-ship duration.

What if you already paid for a seaplane package?

Contact the company named on the payment receipt before the port call. Ask it to state in writing whether the flight is operating, which airline will provide it and what will replace it if it is not. Keep the itinerary, receipt and replies together.

If the package combines a seaplane flight with a boat cruise or road transfer, separate the components:

  • Is the boat cruise still confirmed?
  • Has the joining pier or pickup time changed?
  • Will the unused flight portion be refunded or substituted?
  • Does the revised route still return before your ship’s all-aboard time?
  • Can you decline a substitute that does not suit your mobility, children or comfort with heights?

Do not accept “similar experience” without details. A cable car, viewpoint climb and bay cruise involve different travel time, physical effort and weather exposure.

Which alternative best replaces the seaplane experience?

For an elevated view with less road travel

Consider the Queen Cable Car and attractions at Sun World Ha Long from the cruise port, subject to confirmed opening hours and maintenance status. It offers an elevated city-and-water view, but it is not an aerial circuit over the limestone islands. Guests who dislike heights should consider another option.

For limestone scenery while remaining mostly seated

A bay cruise may better match the reason you wanted the flight. Ask for the boarding point, sailing route and complete pickup-to-return duration. Guests who want scenery without demanding activity can compare a Halong cruise without cave or kayak stops. Boarding a boat can still involve steps, gaps and moving surfaces, so disclose mobility needs before confirming.

For a short and flexible port day

A private local drive can be shortened if disembarkation is late or the weather changes. Agree the priority stop, walking level and turnaround time in advance. This may produce fewer dramatic views than a flight, but it can protect the return to the ship more effectively on a tight call.

The best substitute depends on what you valued: a high viewpoint, photography, limestone scenery, limited walking or simply a special shared experience. Choose for that outcome rather than copying the old flight’s position in an itinerary.

How much port-call time should you allow?

Never calculate from the duration of the headline activity alone. Start with the time passengers can actually leave the ship, then add the route from the release point to the attraction, check-in or boarding, the activity, the return drive and the margin before all aboard.

Your ship’s scheduled arrival is not necessarily the moment you can step into a vehicle. Clearance, gangway flow, tender operations where applicable and tour-priority arrangements can shorten usable time. Read how much time you really have ashore in Halong before choosing a replacement.

Use the ship’s published all-aboard instruction as the hard operational deadline. The departure time shown on a cruise itinerary is not a suitable target for reaching the port gate. Our guide to what all aboard means on a Halong port call explains how to set the day around the earlier deadline.

What changes when the ship or weather is late?

Aviation and marine activities can both be affected by weather, but one does not automatically replace the other. If poor visibility prevents a flight, a cable car may also provide a limited view. If marine restrictions affect boat movements, a local land plan may be more practical. Confirm the status of the chosen activity on the day rather than assuming the fallback is operating.

If the ship releases passengers late, protect the return first. Remove the most distant or time-sensitive element, agree a new turnaround point and preserve the return margin. Do not compress check-in, race between venues or rely on an unconfirmed private flight to recover time.

Who needs extra planning?

Seniors and guests with limited mobility: ask about the complete movement chain, including vehicle access, walking surface, steps, boat boarding and cable-car station access. “Mostly seated” does not mean step-free.

Families with children: confirm the current operator or attraction’s age, supervision and identification rules. Build in food, restroom and waiting time; a child-friendly activity can still fail if the day has long queues and rushed transfers.

Guests anxious about flying or heights: choose a water-level or land alternative openly. A substitute should fit the guest, not merely resemble the original view.

Photographers: evaluate what the alternative can realistically show. A city cable car, a moving boat and a roadside viewpoint produce different angles, window reflections and time to compose. Protecting expensive equipment during boat boarding may matter more than adding another stop.

A practical booking checklist

  • Record the ship name, arrival date, scheduled arrival and all-aboard time.
  • Confirm where passengers are released and where the guide or driver will meet them.
  • For any claimed flight, obtain the operating airline and live booking confirmation.
  • Request the exact check-in, departure and return points.
  • Confirm passenger, identification, baggage and accessibility rules.
  • Calculate the full ship-to-ship time, including a protected return margin.
  • Agree the weather, late-arrival, cancellation and refund response in writing.
  • Choose a confirmed fallback that fits the same party and the remaining time.

Send Halong Shore Excursion your ship name, arrival date, current port times, mobility needs and the part of the seaplane experience you most wanted. We can apply the Ship + Arrival Date logic to the real time ashore and suggest a practical, confirmed alternative. First check how cruise arrival and departure times affect a Halong excursion so the replacement is built around the ship rather than an obsolete listing.
