Choose Hanoi Old Quarter for street life and historic urban buildings; choose Bat Trang for ceramic design, the pottery village or a particular hands-on activity. Both require a substantial road journey from Halong. The better choice is the experience your party wants enough to justify that journey, with time to enjoy it before the return drive.
Make one area the main purpose of the day. The Old Quarter and Bat Trang are separate destinations, and a class bearing the name “Bat Trang” is not necessarily held in the village.
Compare what you would actually see
| Your main interest | Useful core visit | What makes it different |
|---|---|---|
| Old Hanoi beyond the street scene | Old Quarter, with the Heritage House at 87 Ma May as a possible anchor | The narrow shop-house opens into successive rooms and courtyards. The front served trade, while living and worship spaces sat farther inside or upstairs. The courtyards explain how a deep urban house gained light and ventilation. |
| Ceramic design and craft history | Bat Trang Pottery Museum, also called Trung tam Tinh hoa Lang nghe Viet | The building takes inspiration from potters’ wheels. Inside, ceramic and craft displays follow their development over time. This gives a ceramics-focused visit a purpose beyond browsing shops. |
| Making or decorating pottery | The workshop whose actual address and complete session fit | A class marketed as “Bat Trang” may be in the Old Quarter rather than the village. The activity’s location, duration and finished-piece collection matter more than its name. |
Build one coherent route
For the Old Quarter, combine one heritage interior with a short surrounding street walk and a meal or coffee stop. At 87 Ma May, the interest is the relationship between shop, home and courtyard, rather than a large museum collection. Check the house’s admission for the visit date; festival demonstrations are separate, dated activities. For a Catholic architectural focus instead, the St Joseph’s Cathedral guide explains exterior visits and the separate rules for entering the church.

For Bat Trang, decide whether the centre of the day is the museum, a specific workshop or shopping for finished ceramics. Treat museum admission, a pottery class, a production demonstration and a village walk as separate itinerary items. A stop labelled “pottery village” does not establish that all four are included.
A pottery class has two finish times
The first is when your party can leave the venue, after the activity, washing hands, toilets and packing. The second is when your handmade piece is ready. Shaping, drying, glazing and firing may continue after your ship has sailed. Painting a prepared piece does not automatically solve that problem.
Use the Bat Trang village and pottery-class guide to compare the actual session and collection arrangements. If you want something to carry aboard immediately, choose a finished item. Settle packing, shipping and costs before paying, and keep browsing inside the agreed time.
Which route suits your walking and family needs?
Old Quarter walking can involve kerbs, uneven pavements, road crossings and busy street activity. Bat Trang can involve village lanes, thresholds, market congestion or steps at the selected venue. Neither an indoor museum nor a seated pottery activity establishes a continuous accessible route.
For a wheelchair user, select the venue and vehicle drop-off together; the Bat Trang wheelchair guide covers the route to the activity table and toilet. For children, choose between looking at ceramics and making something, then check the session’s age and supervision requirements. Include a seated break or meal that meets the group’s needs, rather than adding one only after fatigue sets in.
Will either route fit the Halong port day?
Use the Hanoi timing guide to work backwards from the ship’s all-aboard time. Have the driving plan assessed for the actual Old Quarter or Bat Trang address; a city-centre estimate is not automatically a village estimate.
Agree the legal drop-off, the walking route to pickup and a fixed vehicle departure. The driver may wait away from the attraction. Allow time to reach the car and load purchases before that departure, with the return drive and port-entry margin still protected.
Combine both areas only if the extra transfer leaves a worthwhile visit at each. If clearance or traffic costs time, remove the second area first. If the main experience no longer fits, choose a local Halong outing before beginning the long journey. A flexible private car cannot make a fixed workshop session shorter.
Send Halong Shore Excursion your Ship + Arrival Date, port times, walking needs and the experience that matters most: Old Quarter heritage, ceramic design or making pottery. Build the day around that priority and its actual address.
