Halong Shore Excursion

How Much Cash Should Cruise Guests Carry in Halong?

Carry Vietnamese dong for your actual unpaid cash costs, chosen extras and a protected way back to the cruise port. There is no single daily allowance that suits both a prepaid excursion and an independent trip. Halong Shore Excursion recommends calculating the amount for your whole party, using current confirmations and prices.

Separate cash to carry from cash still to obtain

Total VND cash budget = required unpaid costs to cover in cash + chosen optional cash spending + return reserve.

Additional VND to obtain = max(0, total VND cash budget − usable VND already set aside for this outing).

Existing notes reduce what you need to withdraw or exchange, not the total needed ashore. If you already have enough, obtain no more; take the budgeted amount and secure any unnecessary surplus.

Include an essential card-paid purchase in the cash-payment allowance if you need enough cash to cover a failed card transaction. Count each contingency once. Foreign banknotes, an unused card limit and cash unavailable to your group are not VND already available for the outing.

Calculate unpaid costs for the party

Start with the payment record. A deposit or confirmed reservation is not proof that the full excursion balance has been paid. Establish the amount still due, currency, payment method and collection time. If a balance is payable in another currency, keep it separate from the VND calculation unless the provider agrees a VND amount.

Cost How to count it
Tour or vehicle balance Count a party price once. Check whether return travel, waiting and extra stops are included.
Admission and activities Count only participating guests. Use the attraction’s actual adult, child, age or height conditions.
Meals and drinks Exclude prepaid inclusions. Budget extra dishes, drinks and any stated service charge from the agreed menu or quote.
Shopping and optional activities Set your own limit; neither belongs in the budget automatically.
Tips Allow only what you choose to give. The Halong tipping guide separates appreciation from required payment.

Use current written prices for the booked date. “Lunch included” does not necessarily include extra drinks; a bay cruise may price kayaking separately. Confirm those details before allocating cash. Having money for an add-on does not mean it fits the ship’s schedule.

Match the budget to your outing

Fully prepaid excursion: leave paid transport, guide, admission and meals out of the cash calculation. What remains may be only personal extras and the return reserve. Resolve any unclear balance with Halong Shore Excursion before disembarkation.

Independent Bai Chay visit: budget outward and return journeys separately unless the driver has agreed both. Check the destination, quoted or app total and payment method before starting. The outward fare does not guarantee the later price or availability; use the guide to finding a taxi back to Halong Cruise Port.

Hanoi or Ninh Binh: arrange the return vehicle, driver contact and pickup before leaving Halong. Cash for a hypothetical long ride does not secure a vehicle. Obtain essential VND before the long-distance portion instead of relying on an ATM near the final attraction.

Set the return reserve once and protect it

Base the reserve on the furthest planned location, party size, vehicle needed and a realistic replacement-transport quote. Check that the fallback can actually be arranged. A local Bai Chay ride allowance cannot stand in for a return from Hanoi.

Keep that amount separate from souvenir and tip money. With a waiting private vehicle, it supports an unexpected problem; it does not replace the agreed return arrangement.

For families, assign responsibility for the reserve and keep another usable payment method separately. If companions split up, each group needs access to its own return funds, terminal information and communication. Shared cash is useful only when the person holding it is reachable.

Carry useful VND notes

Use VND for the working budget. Do not assume small sellers, taxis or ticket counters accept US dollars or euros. If foreign cash is accepted, establish the VND total, conversion and change before paying. See cash and US-dollar notes in Halong.

Prepare smaller notes for modest purchases rather than relying on change for a large banknote. Read the printed denomination, count the zeros and check change at the counter. Keep larger notes and the reserve apart from money used frequently, and avoid displaying the whole supply.

Obtain cash without losing excursion time

Withdraw or exchange only the additional amount your calculation requires, allowing for available denominations. ATM operator and card-issuer fees affect the cost of obtaining cash. Check them and any currency-conversion offer before approval; the ATM guide for Halong cruise passengers explains the choices and failed-withdrawal response.

For banknote exchange, use a legitimate provider, confirm the rate and fees, and count the VND before leaving. Consult the Halong money-exchange guide. Do not spend the return margin searching for a better rate or a working machine.

Confirm card or wallet acceptance before relying on it; a displayed logo or QR code does not establish that your account will work. Keep a physical backup and reduce optional spending if payment access fails.

Send Halong Shore Excursion your Ship + Arrival Date, party size, itinerary and prepaid inclusions so the remaining costs can be identified before the port day.
