- Keep it local: one short Ha Long experience is better than spending most of the call on the road.

Important for this schedule
- Avoid Hanoi or Ninh Binh with this short usable window.
From ship to meeting point
Before you leave the ship
Carry your cruise card and follow the ship's instructions about passports, passport copies and landing cards. Do not assume that the cruise line will always keep your original passport; procedures vary by ship and itinerary.
- Photograph the onboard notice showing the port name, all-aboard time and local port-agent details.
- Save the meeting point, return deadline and driver or guide contact for offline use.
- Give every adult in the group a copy in case you become separated or one phone loses power.
- Protect cards and documents from rain and spray in a waterproof pouch.
Ship → terminal / Main Lobby
Do not schedule pickup at the ship's published arrival time. Arrival, clearance, permission to disembark and your actual time ashore are separate events.
- Planning baseline: Around 30 minutes from the time passengers are permitted ashore to the Main Lobby.
- Practical range: About 15–45 minutes, depending on berth position, gangway queues, mobility and shuttle loading.
- Route: For calls using the international quay, the ship-to-lobby route can be roughly 1 km.
- Transport inside the port: A complimentary port shuttle normally carries cruise passengers between the ship area and terminal. Walk only if port staff permit it and the route is comfortable for you.
Drivers and guides normally cannot enter the secure ship or gangway area. If arrangements change on the day, follow port staff and your ship's announcement first.
Where your driver or guide meets you
Halong Shore Excursion normally uses Ticket Counter #3 inside the Main Lobby or the Flagpole immediately outside the Main Lobby entrance.
Your final confirmation states the exact point, driver or guide contact and recommended return deadline. Stay at that confirmed point if you cannot immediately see your name sign. Do not accept an unverified offer from another driver.
Port name in Vietnamese: Cảng tàu khách quốc tế Hạ Long, Số 9 đường Hạ Long, phường Bãi Cháy, tỉnh Quảng Ninh, Việt Nam
Open port locationWheelchair & step-free access
The passenger terminal, Main Lobby and outside pickup area have ramped routes beside stair sections. An end-to-end shore visit may still include barriers: gangway slope, shuttle access, kerbs, vehicle steps, boat boarding and attraction paths can change by call and tide.
Before booking, report the wheelchair or mobility-scooter type and dimensions, whether it folds, equipment weight and whether the guest can transfer into a vehicle. Halong Shore Excursion can then check the port-to-vehicle route and recommend a suitable itinerary.
Getting around
A pre-arranged private transfer is the simplest choice for a fixed pickup, long-distance trip or mobility requirement. App-booked Grab and Xanh SM vehicles may also operate in Bai Chay, but availability can tighten when a large ship disembarks.
- Match the vehicle registration and driver details before boarding.
- For a street taxi, confirm the meter or agree the full fare before departure.
- Save the registration and keep the port address on your phone in Vietnamese.
- Arrange the return pickup or leave enough time to order another vehicle.
- Open-top buses and local electric sightseeing vehicles may operate near the terminal; routes and hours can change.
Travel-time reality
These are planning ranges from Halong International Cruise Port under normal conditions, not guarantees. Rain, fog, road works, weekends, public holidays and congestion can add time.
- Tuan Chau International Passenger Port: about 13–15 km; normally 15–30 minutes each way.
- Yen Tu: about 40–50 km; normally 60–90 minutes each way.
- Hanoi: about 155 km; normally 2.5–3.5 hours each way.
- Ninh Binh: about 165 km; plan about 3–4 hours each way.
- Cat Bi International Airport: about 45 km; normally around 60 minutes.
Hanoi and Ninh Binh fit only when usable time ashore leaves a comfortable margin after disembarkation, both transfers, the visit and the port return process. Use the Ship + Arrival Date port-call guide for your specific call.
Useful stops before you go back onboard
Toilet, information & port facilities
Inside the Main Lobby
The official port information lists a three-storey passenger terminal with cafés or fast food, shopping and an ATM. Local operating information also records restrooms, air-conditioned seating, drinks and a passenger information counter.
- Restrooms: Normally free to use. Carry tissues as a backup during busy calls.
- Waiting: The air-conditioned Main Lobby is the safest place to wait when you have less than one free hour.
- ATM: Availability, foreign-card acceptance, fees and limits depend on the machine and issuing bank.
- Currency exchange: The information counter may offer exchange during cruise calls, but opening and currency availability can vary.
- Shopping and refreshments: Outlet hours often follow passenger traffic.
- Local cruise check-in: Confirm the operator and departure port because many local cruises depart from Tuan Chau instead.
Choose by usable time
- Under 1 hour: Remain in the terminal for the restroom, seating, refreshments, Wi-Fi if available and small purchases.
- 1–2 hours: Choose one nearby café, restaurant, hotel lounge or pre-booked massage. Arrange the return vehicle first.
- 2–4 hours: Consider one Sun World attraction, Bai Chay Beach, VUI-Fest, a meal or a spa visit.
- Evening or overnight: Consider VUI-Fest and Bai Chay Lighthouse after checking same-day operation and the ship's re-entry notice.
Times exclude the terminal-to-ship return. Distances and walking routes vary by entrance.
Money, ATM & payments
Vietnam uses the Vietnamese đồng (VND). Larger hotels, restaurants and shops commonly accept major cards; taxis, market stalls and small businesses may require cash.
- The port lists an ATM, but foreign-card support, fees and withdrawal limits are machine-specific.
- Foreign-card withdrawals are often capped at roughly VND 2–3 million per transaction; this is not a guaranteed port-ATM limit.
- Keep smaller notes for short rides and low-value purchases. Count zeros carefully.
- Do not depend on USD being accepted or on the terminal exchange counter being open.
- For jewellery or pearls, compare prices and request an itemised receipt, product details, certificate and return terms.
Phone, Wi-Fi, data & charging
- Wi-Fi: Hotels and many cafés provide customer Wi-Fi; terminal availability may depend on port operations.
- Mobile data: Viettel, Vinaphone and Mobifone are the main networks. A physical tourist SIM normally requires passport registration. For a short call, activate a compatible eSIM before arrival if possible.
- Offline backup: Download an offline map and save the port address, meeting point, vehicle details and return deadline.
- Power: Carry a charged power bank. Vietnam uses 220V electricity; two-round-pin sockets are common.
Coffee, Wi-Fi & a cool place to sit
- Main Lobby: The closest choice for air-conditioned seating, refreshments and Wi-Fi if operating. Stay here if less than one hour remains.
- Wyndham Garden Legend Halong: A full-service hotel steps from the port, useful for a meal, lounge, room or pre-booked Oasis Spa treatment.
- Thong Zeo Coffee: A hillside café in the Hai Quan area, reached by a short taxi ride. Allow 1.5–2 hours in total and confirm current opening hours.
Arrange the return vehicle before leaving for a café and keep the ship-to-terminal return time separate.
Massage & spa
A clearly timed 60–120 minute spa visit can fit between an excursion and the ship when travel, changing and payment time are included.
- Oasis Spa, Wyndham Garden Legend Halong: The nearest confirmed hotel-spa option and the best choice when staying close to the ship matters.
- Massage Hai Trang: A local massage venue at 43 Vuon Dao, Bai Chay. Confirm the appointment and current hours before leaving the port.
If the return deadline is close, use the nearest available venue or remain at the terminal.
Eat nearby
Local business hours can change. Confirm on the day and include ordering, cooking, payment and the complete return journey.
- Seafood — Ngoc Phuong Nam 1: A Bai Chay option for a seated seafood meal. Ask for the price by weight before ordering live seafood.
- Indian food — Indian Master Food: At 80 Ha Long Road and advertises Indian and halal food. Guests with strict halal requirements should confirm current certification, ingredients and kitchen practice directly.
- Vegetarian — Chay Hoang Kim 99: At 97 Hai Quan. Ask about dairy, egg or vegan requirements.
- Street food — VUI-Fest: Multiple stalls when operating. Check displayed prices and choose freshly cooked food.
Local drink: Quang Hanh sparkling natural mineral water is produced in Quang Ninh.
Shopping & souvenirs
For a quick purchase, use an open terminal shop rather than adding a taxi journey close to the return deadline. Small Halong souvenirs, a Vietnamese conical hat and a lightweight T-shirt are easy to carry.
- Check the displayed price and count change before leaving.
- For jewellery or pearls, compare prices and ask for an itemised receipt, material details, certificate and return terms.
- Do not treat a driver or guide recommendation as proof of value or authenticity.
- Follow the cruise line's rules for alcohol, food, plants and other goods brought back on board.
Weather & what to bring
- September–November: Often clearer and cooler, although coastal storms remain possible.
- December–March: Cooler, with wind, mist and reduced bay visibility possible.
- April–May: Often warm and sunny.
- June–August: Hot, humid and more affected by monsoon rain and sudden changes.
Bring water, sun protection, a light rain layer and non-slip shoes. Protect your cruise card and phone from spray. Port authorities and boat operators may change or suspend activities when conditions are unsafe.
Children & older guests
- Choose by steps, walking surface, heat exposure, boat boarding and transfer time, not only by total tour duration.
- A compact folding stroller is easier for vehicles and boats, but many caves and viewpoints have stairs.
- Guests avoiding stairs or kayaking need a confirmed alternative; remaining on the boat is not possible on every itinerary.
- Request a child seat in advance and provide the child's age, height and weight.
- Private excursions can usually adjust pace and stop length, but accessibility must still be checked for every vehicle and attraction.
Safety
- Use pre-arranged transport or an app-booked Grab or Xanh SM vehicle and verify the registration before boarding.
- For a street taxi, confirm the meter or full fare first and save the vehicle registration.
- Keep your phone, wallet and cruise card secure in crowded areas.
- Cross at marked crossings where available and move steadily and predictably.
- For urgent help inside the port, contact ship security or port staff first.
Emergency numbers: 112 general emergency/search and rescue; 113 police; 114 fire; 115 ambulance.
Protect your return time
Return to the ship
Return to Halong International Cruise Port by the recommended deadline in your final confirmation, earlier than the ship's all-aboard time.
- Show the driver the Vietnamese port name and address.
- Allow for traffic, terminal entry, security, shuttle queues and the route from the Main Lobby to the gangway.
- For Hanoi or travel through Hanoi gateways, use the earlier return plan supplied for that call; peak periods and public holidays can add substantial delay.
- If delayed, contact the driver or guide, Halong Shore Excursion and the ship's port agent immediately. Do not wait until all-aboard time.
The ship's onboard instructions always take priority.
Take one screenshot with these numbers, your departure time and your recommended return time.
