Night squid fishing usually appears as an onboard activity after dinner on a local overnight Halong Bay cruise. It does not normally mean a short fishing boat leaves the pier in the evening and returns cruise passengers to their ocean ship a few hours later. Confirm the complete local-boat itinerary before deciding that the activity fits your port call.
If returning to your ocean-ship cabin that night is essential, accept only a licensed same-evening trip whose operator confirms the departure pier, sailing hours, fishing activity, landing time and transport back to the correct cruise terminal. At our review on 14 September 2026, Halong Shore Excursion had not verified a standard standalone same-night squid-fishing product designed around visiting cruise ships.
Why is “squid fishing at 21:00” not enough?
An evening activity time can sit inside a two-day or three-day cruise. Passengers may have checked in around midday, sailed for several hours, eaten dinner and anchored for the night before fishing begins. When the activity finishes, that vessel remains on the bay and returns to its pier the next morning or later.
Bhaya Cruises’ current activity guide presents squid fishing on its overnight programmes. Its published itineraries place the activity after dinner and disembark guests on a later day. This confirms that squid fishing is a real visitor experience, but it does not create a same-night connection to an ocean ship.
Read the booking in this order:
- Registration place and latest check-in on the first day.
- Local-boat departure pier and sailing time.
- Fishing programme and whether it is optional.
- Where the local boat sleeps.
- Disembarkation pier and time on the final day.
- Road transfer back to the ocean ship.
A late-afternoon ocean-ship arrival may provide a free evening but still miss the local boat’s daytime check-in. An early ocean-ship departure the next morning may be incompatible with the local cruise’s later pier return.
Three products that should not be confused
| Product | What it usually means | Question for a port call |
|---|---|---|
| Overnight bay cruise | Cabin, dinner, anchored night and next-day return | Can the passenger legally and safely sleep away from the ocean ship? |
| Evening or dinner cruise | Night scenery and meal on a scheduled return sailing | Does the exact programme include fishing? |
| Dedicated fishing outing | A separately chartered or scheduled fishing trip | Is it licensed, operating and confirmed to return that night? |
The word “night cruise” does not prove squid fishing. The words “squid fishing” do not prove a pier return. Obtain the vessel name and full programme rather than relying on the activity headline.
Can you sleep on a local boat during an overnight port call?
Only after the ocean cruise line confirms that passengers may remain away overnight and explains the documentation and re-entry process. A ship listed as staying in Halong overnight does not automatically permit unrestricted exit and reboarding at any hour.
Ask guest services onboard:
- Whether an overnight absence must be registered.
- Which identification and ship documents to carry.
- Which gangway, tender or terminal entrance operates on return.
- The latest required reboarding time on the final day.
- What to do if the local boat changes its return.
Use the Halong overnight shore-access guide before paying for a cabin elsewhere. Two calendar dates do not always create one long usable window.
What does the fishing activity involve?
On a typical overnight programme, the sightseeing boat anchors and the crew prepares lights and fishing equipment. Guests use a line or short rod with a squid lure from a designated deck area. Crew demonstrate the technique, and participation is optional.
This is an introduction to the activity, not a promise of several hours with a private fishing guide. Ask how long equipment is available, how many guests share the area, whether seating is possible and which deck is used. The crew may suspend the activity because of weather, vessel operations or safety.
Select it for the atmosphere and chance to try. Catching squid is never guaranteed. A promotional photograph shows a possible result, not the expected result for every guest, season or evening.
Can you eat what you catch?
Some operators may prepare a catch as part of their programme, but confirm this on the actual vessel. Ask whether the kitchen accepts guest-caught squid, how it is prepared and whether service depends on time or the amount caught.
Do not plan the evening meal around your catch. Guests with seafood allergy should avoid handling squid and ask about contact with shared surfaces, utensils and cooking areas. Carry prescribed emergency medicine with the passenger.
Do not assume fresh or prepared seafood may be taken back onto the ocean ship. Cruise-line food rules and border or port procedures take priority.
Is night squid fishing safe for beginners?
A crew-guided activity can be suitable for a beginner who follows the briefing, remains in the designated area and can move safely on the vessel. The practical risks include hooks or lures, wet deck, low light, vessel movement and the open water beside the fishing position.
Wear closed or secure footwear with grip. Keep loose clothing, straps and long hair away from the line. Put the phone away while handling equipment. Do not cast, lean over a rail or change location unless instructed.
Squid can release ink and the deck may become wet. Stand where the crew directs and allow staff to handle a catch if that is the vessel’s rule. An experienced angler must still follow the tourist boat’s procedures.
Children need a specific answer
Ask the operator whether a child of the passenger’s age may participate, watch or remain in another supervised onboard area. An adult should stay beside the child and control access to the line, lure and deck edge.
Do not assume a “family-friendly cruise” means unsupervised fishing is permitted. Confirm life-jacket expectations for the evening deck and whether the child can leave safely if tired.
The activity often happens late in the child’s day, after travel, boarding and dinner. Watching for a few minutes may be a better choice than building the whole overnight booking around participation.
What should seniors and guests with limited mobility check?
Assess the whole vessel, not only the fishing spot. Ask about the pier gangway, steps between cabin, restaurant and activity deck, handrails, lighting, toilet access and the availability of a stable seat near the designated area.
A wheelchair user needs the exact route and doorway or lift details for the named vessel. Provide the mobility device’s dimensions and weight. Do not rely on crew lifting a guest or chair. The Halong sightseeing-boat accessibility guide provides the questions to resolve before booking.
A guest with poor balance can watch from a seated indoor or sheltered location only if the operator confirms that such a view exists. “You can sit out” does not automatically mean an accessible waiting place.
What about seasickness and medical needs?
Anchored water may feel calmer than active cruising, but movement can continue. Darkness and focusing on the illuminated water can worsen symptoms for some guests. Read the Halong seasickness guide and discuss appropriate medication with a qualified clinician before travel.
Keep essential medicine, glasses and a warm or rain layer with the passenger. Do not leave medicine in luggage that staff have moved to a cabin or another vessel. Tell a companion and crew about a serious condition that may require help.
Alcohol can reduce balance and judgement. Decide whether to fish before drinking, and never combine active participation with impaired movement around a night deck.
Weather can cancel only the activity or the whole sailing
Rain, wind, lightning, visibility and official marine instructions can affect the evening. A local cruise may sail but move fishing to a different time or omit it. More serious conditions can alter the route, anchorage or the complete voyage.
Ask separately about:
- Refund or substitute when only squid fishing is cancelled.
- Refund and accommodation when the overnight cruise is cancelled.
- The response if the ocean ship arrives too late for local check-in.
- The response if the local boat returns later than planned.
A seller’s cancellation policy addresses money. Your port-call plan also needs a practical way back aboard.
How should the return be calculated?
Start with the ocean ship’s all-aboard time on the correct date. Set an earlier terminal-arrival target. Add the road journey from the local-boat pier, disembarkation, luggage collection and a contingency for changed marine operations. The local boat’s scheduled docking time is not the time the passenger reaches the ocean-ship gangway.
Use the two-day Halong port-call guide to compare both days as complete windows. Do not borrow time from the protected return because the ocean ship appears close across the water.
If a same-night trip is offered, apply the same calculation to that night: fishing finish, vessel movement to the licensed pier, disembarkation, vehicle pickup, correct terminal entry and reboarding.
What if the ocean ship arrives late?
Contact the local operator before travelling to the pier. Ask whether boarding remains possible under its passenger manifest and sailing permission. Do not chase a vessel to a different marina or arrange an unverified speedboat transfer.
If the local overnight departure is missed, choose a confirmed land-based evening or remain aboard the ocean ship. A same-night dinner cruise is an alternative only when its departure, programme and ship return all fit; it should not be assumed to include fishing.
Night squid-fishing checklist
- Vessel, licence context, itinerary and departure pier identified.
- Overnight cruise, dinner cruise and fishing outing distinguished.
- Ocean cruise line approves any overnight absence.
- Fishing time, participation, equipment and catch policy confirmed.
- Children, mobility, medical and seasickness needs checked.
- Weather cancellation and late-ship responses obtained in writing.
- Final local-boat landing and road transfer calculated.
- Correct ocean terminal and protected reboarding time fixed.
Send Halong Shore Excursion your Ship + Arrival Date, both days’ port times, all aboard, and whether sleeping away from the ocean ship is acceptable. The answer must confirm the complete chain: ship release → local-boat check-in → fishing and overnight operation → pier return → road transfer → protected ocean-ship reboarding.
