Tipping on a Halong Shore Excursion: Guides, Drivers and Crew

Tipping on a Halong shore excursion should be voluntary and separate from the agreed tour price. Check what your booking includes, settle the balance and any agreed extras, then decide whether to thank the guide, driver, boat crew or activity staff.

There is no single verified Halong tipping amount that fits a short transfer, a full-day private guide and a shared bay cruise. Halong Shore Excursion recommends clarifying the recipients and whether any suggested amount is per person or for the whole party before preparing cash.

Is the payment a tip or an agreed charge?

Payment What to check
Tour balance The outstanding price, currency, method, due time and person collecting it.
Extra activity or service Exactly what you are adding and its price before you accept it.
Service charge in the booking terms Whether it is included already and what the agreed charge covers.
Voluntary gratuity Whom you want to thank, your chosen amount and whether it will be shared.

A kayaking fee, drink, extra transfer or agreed overtime payment is a different decision from a tip. Giving a gratuity does not pay an outstanding tour balance.

If the distinction is unclear, ask for the item and total in writing. The Halong language guide includes the Vietnamese request for a written VND total.

Do prepaid ocean-cruise gratuities cover the local team?

Do not assume so. A separately booked Halong excursion may involve a local guide, road driver, sightseeing-boat crew and another activity provider. “Gratuities included” on your cruise invoice does not identify those independent recipients unless the terms expressly include them.

Read the excursion’s own inclusions. The Halong Bay 7.5-hour group excursion, for example, lists tips and personal expenses as excluded. That wording means they are outside the advertised price; it does not set a compulsory tip amount.

For a cruise-line-booked excursion, check that line’s terms too. Royal Caribbean’s current shore-excursion FAQ describes tipping service personnel as optional. This is that line’s guidance, not a fixed gratuity scale for every Halong booking.

How much should you prepare?

Choose a discretionary budget after reserving enough for the tour balance, necessary purchases and return transport. The Halong cash-budget guide separates those costs from optional spending.

If the organiser suggests an amount, confirm:

  • The unit: per passenger, per couple or for the whole group.
  • The service: one transfer, a half day or the entire outing.
  • The recipients: guide, driver and boat crew together or separately.
  • The status: an adjustable recommendation or a charge already agreed in the booking.

A couple joining a shared boat and a family using a private full-day guide should not automatically multiply the same figure. Decide from the service received and your budget; a voluntary contribution can be more, less or nothing.

Who receives the money, and when?

Ask when each person’s service ends. The guide may finish at the marina while a different driver handles the return to your ocean ship. One envelope given at the final drop-off may not reach everyone you intended.

  • Guide and driver: hand separate contributions to each if that is your intention. If one collects for another, confirm the split.
  • Boat crew: ask which roles share a crew tip box and whether your shore guide is included.
  • Rower or activity staff: confirm the activity price first; any optional thank-you is separate.
  • Several households: decide whether each pays separately or one person gives a clearly identified group contribution.

Give it when that person’s service is complete and everyone is stationary. Avoid handing over money while the driver is moving, during a boat transfer or on a crowded gangway. Confirm the recipients again if the guide or vehicle changes during the day.

Which currency is practical?

Vietnamese dong is the straightforward local option when you have suitable notes. Another currency may be accepted by agreement, but a tour priced in US dollars does not establish that every crew member wants foreign banknotes.

Check denominations and prepare separate amounts before leaving the ship. Keep transport money, documents and optional tipping cash apart. Do not make an ATM detour just to obtain a tip.

If you have no suitable cash, thank the person and ask the booking provider whether a verified cashless method is available. Avoid an unfamiliar account or QR code presented under time pressure.

What if the itinerary changes or extra help is needed?

After a late arrival or shortened excursion, assess the service actually delivered. A cancelled activity’s refund or replacement terms remain separate from thanking the people who still served your group.

For wheelchair, stroller or luggage assistance, establish the actual task and any equipment or staffing cost before booking. Passengers should not discover an undisclosed gratuity requirement at the moment they need help. A real additional service and a voluntary thank-you must be explained separately.

What if you feel pressured?

Ask: “Is this an optional tip or a charge on my booking? What does it cover?” Compare the answer with your confirmation and contact Halong Shore Excursion if they differ. Keep the person’s name, time, place, amount requested and any receipt or messages for a later review.

You can decline a voluntary tip. Keep a payment disagreement separate from any correctly agreed service charge, and do not spend the ship-return buffer finding cash or arguing at the terminal.

Send Halong Shore Excursion your Ship + Arrival Date, excursion and party size to clarify who serves the group and what the booking covers. Prepare any optional gratuity around that actual service arrangement.
