For a Halong shore excursion, check that your insurance covers the whole trip, Vietnam, independently booked tours and the activities you will actually do. “Cruise cover” does not by itself answer whether a cancelled port, unused tour, hospital bill or missed ship is covered.
Halong Shore Excursion can describe the planned day so you can obtain specific written answers from your insurer before committing to non-refundable arrangements. Ask for the relevant section, covered causes, exclusions, limit, excess or deductible, and required evidence. The policy and claim assessment determine what is payable.

Match the insured trip and people to your booking
Check Vietnam, transit countries, full travel dates and maximum trip duration. Confirm any cruise extension is active. Match the insured-person list to everyone travelling, including children, relatives in separate cabins and a caregiver who may need to remain ashore with someone.
Complete required medical declarations and screening. Answer the insurer’s questions about existing physical or mental health conditions, symptoms under investigation, pending tests, recent treatment and medication changes. Ask about reporting changes before departure and whether a companion’s health could affect a cancellation or early-return claim.
Check age restrictions, mobility aids and assisted-travel conditions. Cover does not establish that cave stairs, a steep gangway or a small-boat transfer is suitable: use the limited-mobility Halong guide when choosing the route.
If relying on card-linked insurance, confirm activation, any required card spending or registration, included family members, trip-duration limits and cruise conditions. When flights, cruise and excursion were paid separately, ask which purchases and losses qualify. Keep the certificate and full wording, not only a card-benefit summary.
Describe the activities separately
Give the insurer your ship, Halong arrival date and actual components: private car or taxi, commercial day boat, tender or smaller transfer boat, cave walking and steps, kayaking, a rowed bamboo boat, swimming or cycling where planned. Passenger cover on a sightseeing boat does not establish cover for paddling a kayak.
Ask about any guide, equipment, licensing, age or other activity conditions, including depth or altitude limits where relevant. Include weather alternatives in the enquiry. If kayaking is excluded or unsuitable, use the Halong no-kayak planning guide to confirm a workable substitute; remaining aboard is an arrangement to verify.
Separate six possible losses
| What happens | Question for your insurer |
|---|---|
| The ship misses Halong completely. | Is there a fixed missed-port payment, reimbursement of an unused tour, or a choice between benefits? What written ship confirmation is required? |
| The ship arrives late and the visit is shortened. | Does the wording cover a shortened call, or only a completely missed port? Can an unused part of an independent excursion qualify? |
| Weather stops the local boat or an activity. | Which causes qualify? Must the provider cancel, and how do an offered alternative or refund affect the claim? |
| Illness prevents a passenger joining the excursion. | What medical evidence is needed? Does the benefit require ship-medical assessment or formally ordered cabin confinement? |
| You return late and miss the ocean ship. | Does missed-departure cover include an intermediate cruise port, your transport type and the actual cause? Which rejoining costs qualify? |
| You need medical help ashore. | Are treatment, ambulance, admission, medical transfer, companion expenses and necessary travel home covered? Which arrangements require assistance-service approval? |
A shortened call is not automatically a missed port, and choosing to skip a wet activity is different from the operator cancelling it. Also ask whether benefits can be combined: do not assume both a missed-port payment and unused-excursion reimbursement are payable for the same event.
Arrange emergency help, payment and claim records separately
Seek urgent medical help first; do not wait for an insurance reply. Vietnam’s ambulance number is 115, and 112 is the national emergency line. Alert the ship or local boat crew when aboard. A companion can contact the insurer while the emergency response proceeds. The hospital guide for Halong cruise passengers covers local coordination.
- Assistance: call the policy’s emergency service as soon as safe. Ask who coordinates the facility, any transfer and communication with the treating team.
- Payment: ask whether the facility accepts direct billing or a guarantee of payment, what approval is required and what you must pay yourself. Insurance does not remove the possibility of an upfront bill.
- Claim: retain medical notes, itemised bills, proof of payment and assistance references. Ask which additional documents and reporting deadlines apply.
Keep access to funds. Before arranging substantial non-emergency treatment, medical transport or travel home, contact assistance about authorisation and who must make the arrangements. Confirm companion costs separately rather than assuming the patient’s cover pays another person’s hotel or transport bill.
Keep operator refunds and ship rejoining distinct
Ask the excursion provider what can be rescheduled, shortened or refunded, then give that response to the insurer. Keep the original booking, payment and cancellation terms, the change notice and any refund record. Describe services actually delivered; do not report a partly completed tour as wholly cancelled. The cancelled Halong call guide explains the immediate coordination.
For missed departure, check the precise cause and transport definition. A clause for public-transport failure may treat a private taxi differently; ordinary traffic, breakdown and an accident may also have different treatment. Ask what written evidence is needed. Never treat insurance as permission to reduce the practical margin in the Halong safe-return guide.
If you actually miss the ship, contact the ship or issued local port agent, then the insurer. Give names, location, ship deadline, delay, transport used and documents held. Before buying replacement flights or hotels, establish the permitted rejoining plan and insurance authorisation, unless immediate safety requires action. Use the Halong missed-ship action guide; insurance cannot require the captain to wait.
Take a small offline assistance file ashore
Save the policy number, emergency-assistance contact, certificate, relevant wording and written insurer answers. Add cruise and excursion confirmations, insured travellers, agreed activities, claim instructions and the ship’s current contact and port-agent details. Make essential information accessible to a trusted companion if your phone is unavailable.
After an incident, record times, locations, ship notices, operator messages, reports and receipts. Keep copies before handing over documents and send sensitive records through the insurer’s approved channel.
For Halong Shore Excursion, start with Ship + Arrival Date, the actual excursion and passenger needs. Resolve policy questions before the port day, then keep the route, permitted activities and return plan within the confirmed arrangements.
