Before adding a private tour to your Viking Halong visit, check which excursion is included in your own booking, reserve the option you want and confirm its time slot. The included benefit, the activity description and your personal reservation answer three different questions: what your fare covers, what you will do and when you will be doing it.
This matters for passengers on Viking Orion or Viking Venus who want to see the bay but are also considering a private outing. Your included excursion may already meet your main goal. An additional booking should add something you want and fit around the reservation you actually hold.
What does Viking include at Ha Long Bay?
Viking advertises a complimentary shore excursion in each port. In its public Southeast Asia Horizons catalogue reviewed for this guide, Ha Long Bay by Boat is marked as included. The same catalogue lists other experiences separately, including Ha Long Bay Highlights and Paddle Through Scenic Ha Long Bay.
That is a useful example, not confirmation of the programme for your sailing. Viking states that excursion offerings vary by itinerary and can change. Open the full description in your own booking before assuming that a similarly named boat trip includes the same stops, activities or time on the water.
In particular, establish whether your chosen outing includes a cave visit, a kayaking opportunity, a meal or simply scenic cruising. The name alone does not settle those details. If sitting aboard a sightseeing boat and enjoying the limestone landscape is your priority, a confirmed included option that provides that experience may be all you need.
Check the reservation, not just the included label
Use My Viking Journey to review and book your excursions. Do not treat an activity appearing in the public catalogue as evidence that you personally have a place at your preferred time.
Viking’s ocean FAQ says booking opens according to stateroom category and that guests receive a portal notification. Use the opening date shown for your booking. Dates quoted in an older forum discussion, or for a Viking river or expedition cruise, may not apply to your ocean sailing.
When arranging the day, keep a record of these details:
- Activity and date: the exact excursion name and which Halong day it uses.
- Party: every person who needs a place, including friends in another cabin.
- Time: the reserved departure, required meeting time and expected finish.
- Location: where you report for the Viking outing and where it finishes.
- Status: what is confirmed, what is a request and what remains unavailable.
A screenshot or saved confirmation is useful for comparing plans; check subsequent Viking updates before relying on it on the day.
Travelling with friends in different cabins
Coordinate the excursion name, date and time with your whole party. “We booked the included Halong tour” is not enough to establish that everyone has the same reservation.
If your reservation openings differ, ask Viking how to arrange the group before anyone commits to a conflicting alternative. Once everyone has a booking, compare the confirmations. If sharing the same vehicle or guide is essential, request confirmation of that too; matching excursion names alone do not establish a group assignment.
This is especially relevant when one guest needs a slower pace or a different activity level. Viking rates excursions by physical demands, but read the actual activity description together. Choose an outing everyone can manage rather than assume that the word “included” describes its walking or boarding difficulty.
Decide whether you need an extra outing

An excursion ending at one boat landing does not establish that a private driver can collect you there. If the connection depends on leaving the Viking activity early, obtain agreement before booking the second activity.

If the preferred slot is unavailable or you change your mind

Ask Viking which other departures or activities are available before committing to a private plan that depends on one particular slot. An included benefit should not be treated as a promise that your preferred departure will become available. Equally, an unavailable slot does not by itself prove that every included option is unavailable.
Viking’s ocean FAQ says online excursion booking and cancellation close seven days before your cruise departs. During that interval, it directs guests to call for cancellations; onboard staff can assist once you join the ship. Complete your reservation checks before that online cutoff where possible.
If you are replacing a paid Viking excursion, check its cancellation conditions before paying for the replacement. Viking’s ocean FAQ says there are no refunds within two days before an excursion starts. It also says excursions during the first two days of sailing are nonrefundable when onboard management resumes. Ask Viking how those conditions apply to your booking. A private operator’s terms are a separate agreement.
