Yes, Halong International Cruise Port is already in Bai Chay, so a passenger does not need transport merely to “reach Bai Chay.” The real decision is whether the exact attraction, restaurant, beach entrance or street you want is practical to reach on foot from the public port exit and still return aboard safely.
Halong Shore Excursion recommends choosing a Bai Chay experience and naming the destination before checking distance. Bai Chay names a tourism area, not one entrance or town-centre point.
What the published 500-metre figure means
The port describes its location as approximately 500 metres from the Sun World Ha Long Complex. Use that figure for orientation between two large sites. It is not a measured gangway-to-attraction walking route.
Your complete journey can include:
- ship clearance and the gangway;
- the berth-to-terminal route;
- the Main Lobby and public port exit;
- the pedestrian route to a particular visitor entrance;
- crossings, queues and the activity itself;
- the full route back aboard.
Read the ship-to-Main-Lobby guide before using a distance that starts outside the port.

Choose the exact Bai Chay stop
Sun World area: identify the attraction and its current visitor entrance. Reaching the edge of a complex does not include admission, queues or the walk inside. Use the Sun World guide for cruise passengers to judge whether the visit fits.
Bai Chay Beach: choose an open public entrance and decide whether you want a promenade stop or swimming. The beach walking guide covers crossings, weather, changing needs and return transport.
Café or meal: save the venue name and entrance, not just “Bai Chay.” Allow time to order, eat, settle the bill and leave. A restaurant visible across a road may still require a controlled crossing or longer approach.
Waterfront stroll: set a turnaround landmark before starting. An unplanned walk can gradually move the group farther from the port without adding a clear destination.
Start from the public exit, not the ship pin
Follow ship and port staff through the authorised passenger route. Do not copy a vehicle lane or use a restricted gate because a navigation app draws a shorter line.
Once landside, confirm the walking route to the exact entrance. Check both sides of the road, crossings and any construction or barrier. A driving route does not prove a usable pedestrian path.
If the route is unclear, ask at a staffed point before setting off. Save a photo or note of the public entrance used so a driver can return you to the same place.
Use names as well as addresses
The official port contact address is No. 9 Ha Long Road, Bai Chay. Other nearby destinations may be described with similar or even identical street numbering. A number alone can therefore send a driver or passenger to the wrong entrance.
Save Cảng tàu khách quốc tế Hạ Long together with the public port entrance for the return. Keep a separate name and pin for the place you plan to visit. When arranging a ride, confirm both the place name and the entrance before boarding.
Decide whether walking fits the group
Use the least comfortable walker’s limit. Count the route through the port, standing at crossings, the visit itself and the return. A child, senior, passenger with a cane or person pushing a stroller may experience the same map distance differently.
For a wheelchair or scooter, confirm kerb cuts, pavement width, slope, surfaces and the destination entrance. “Nearby” does not establish a continuous step-free route.
Take a ride when heat, rain, heavy bags, limited mobility or a short port window make the road section a poor use of time or energy. Arrange a legal pickup point; do not assume a car can stop wherever the group becomes tired.
Weather can change the decision after you leave the ship
Direct sun and humidity can make a simple local walk tiring. Rain can make crossings and tiled surfaces slippery and can reduce the value of an outdoor stop.
Use a shorter destination or local ride if conditions exceed the group’s plan. Keep enough energy and water for the return through the port rather than spending the whole walking allowance outbound.
Plan the return before starting
Work backward from all aboard through the public port entrance, Main Lobby, security, internal transport or walking, and the gangway. Reaching Bai Chay or the port gate is not the same as being back aboard.
If you may return by taxi or app, save the instructions from the Halong return-taxi guide. Set a walking turnaround and a separate point at which you switch to the ride plan.
Use the port return-time guide and preserve a margin for waiting, a wrong entrance or a tired passenger.
A practical local-walk checklist
- Ship name, arrival date and all aboard.
- Operating public port exit.
- Exact destination and visitor entrance.
- Verified pedestrian route and crossings.
- Weather and least comfortable walker.
- Turnaround landmark and time.
- Return ride, pickup point and payment backup.
Halong Shore Excursion can connect these details through Ship + Arrival Date → excursion-fit logic. A walk in Bai Chay works best when it has one named destination, one verified route and one protected return plan.
