Halong Shore Excursion

What Should Cruise Passengers Bring Ashore in Halong?

Bring a small day bag with your cruise card, the identification required for your port call and planned activities, excursion details, offline return information, phone, power bank, drinking water, weather protection, personal medication, a little Vietnamese đồng (VND) and one payment card. Before leaving the gangway, check the ship’s latest all-aboard notice and whether this Halong call requires your original passport or another form of photo ID. Cruise-line and port-call requirements vary, so follow the instructions issued on board.

Save your ship’s name, port name and address, all-aboard time, port-agent or ship emergency contact, excursion meeting point and driver’s number offline. Use the time standard stated by your ship. Screenshots work without mobile data, but cannot help if the phone itself is flat or unusable. Keep the meeting point, return deadline and essential numbers on paper too, and share a copy with a travelling companion.

Halong shore-day checklist

  • Cruise card and required identification: carry the cruise card for each passenger and the photo ID specified by your ship. Confirm the documents required by your booked activities too. If an activity needs an original passport that your ship is holding, resolve this with Guest Services and the operator before going ashore. A phone photo is a backup, not a substitute when an original is required. For a bay boat trip, check the passenger registration and check-in documents in advance.
  • Excursion confirmation: save the ticket or booking confirmation, pickup time, meeting point and operator contact. If you are meeting an independent guide, keep the guide’s name and sign or name-board details.
  • Phone, charging cable and power bank: charge both devices, test the cable, and save key messages and booking details as screenshots. Open the saved information before leaving the ship to check it is available offline.
  • Return information: write down all aboard, not only the scheduled departure time. Follow the ship’s stated time and set an earlier personal return target; this guide explains when to be back at Halong Cruise Port.
  • Money: carry a modest amount of VND in useful denominations and one widely accepted payment card, preferably stored separately. Base the amount on what is not prepaid; use the detailed guide to plan how much cash to carry in Halong.
  • Drinking water: arrange water for the walk from the ship and the time before your next reliable supply. For bay sightseeing, check the operator’s container rules and use a clean reusable bottle filled from a confirmed drinking-water source where permitted. Do not assume disposable plastic bottles can pass the sightseeing checkpoint. Confirm when included water is handed out; see the water and snacks guide for bay packaging and cruise-ship reboarding checks.
  • Weather and walking protection: take sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and a compact rain layer. Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, and add a light warm layer for a cool or windy boat day. Check the practical guide to what to wear in Halong Bay before packing.
  • Personal medication: bring what you may need while ashore, including motion-sickness medicine if appropriate for you and your itinerary. Keep prescription medicine in its original labelled container and follow its storage instructions. Ask your pharmacist in advance if you need help planning storage during a hot port day.
  • Repellent and activity-specific items: take a suitable mosquito repellent for outdoor parts of the day, including daytime stops. Add shoulder-and-knee coverage for temples and a waterproof pouch or dry bag for kayaking or wet-weather activities.

Pack for the moments away from your vehicle

Keep cruise cards, required ID, money, your phone and any medicine you may need in a small bag that goes with you when you leave the vehicle. Water or a rain layer left in the boot will not help during a boat trip or a long walking stop. Ask what will be provided before deciding how much to carry, and use a bag you can manage while keeping a hand free for boarding.

If you plan to walk independently, save the agreed meeting-point directions and visible landmarks as well as a map. Google Maps does not provide walking directions offline; a downloaded area should not be your only plan for finding the way back. Check what your chosen app can actually do without a connection.

Check prohibited products before the cruise

Do not pack vapes, e-cigarettes or heated-tobacco products for entry into Vietnam. Nicotine-free liquid is not an exemption. If you already have a device onboard, speak to Guest Services before arrival; do not assume leaving it in your cabin resolves the country’s restrictions. Read our Halong port-call vaping guide before preparing your shore-day bag.

What can stay on the ship?

Leave expensive jewelry, unnecessary electronics, large amounts of cash and extra bank cards in the cabin safe. Plan the medicine you carry ashore around the day, possible delays and your individual needs; avoid repacking it into unlabelled containers simply to save bag space. For your passport, resolve both the ship’s instructions and any activity-specific document requirement before deciding whether the original can stay on board.

Final check before you step ashore

  1. Confirm the latest all-aboard time and whether the ship is using ship time or local time.
  2. Confirm the identification or passport requirement for this port call and the activities you have booked.
  3. Check the excursion ticket for the meeting time, location and included items.
  4. Check the weather and any activity-specific footwear or clothing requirement.
  5. Make sure the return details are available offline and to everyone in your party.
