Halong Shore Excursion

What If You Use the Wrong Gangway in Halong?

If you leave through a different gangway and cannot find your Halong guide, stay on the authorised passenger route and report your exact position. Do not cross barriers, walk along a vehicle lane or reboard simply to try another exit unless ship or port staff directs you.

The important issue is not whether the gangway number was “wrong.” It is whether your current port route reaches the meeting point in the latest Halong Shore Excursion confirmation. A ship may change its operating exit, and the port may direct all passengers to the same land-side area.

Halong International Cruise Port. The exact passenger route and meeting point depend on the ship and port call.

Can a cruise ship use more than one gangway?

It can, but passengers should not assume how many will operate in Halong or where each one leads. The ship decides which exit deck and gangway to use, and the arrangement can change with operations.

Ha Long International Cruise Port has a large international quay and multiple port facilities. A map of the ship or terminal does not show the controlled passenger route for your call. Follow the ship’s live app, daily programme, announcements and crew instructions.

First check: are you still following the authorised route?

After leaving the ship, continue only along the path marked or staffed for passengers. If uncertain, stop at a staffed point and ask:

  • Does this route lead to the Main Lobby or public passenger exit?
  • Is there an internal vehicle, and where does it finish?
  • Can I reach the named meeting point from this route?
  • Where should a limited-mobility passenger wait for assistance?

Do not copy another tour group through a gate because its guide is visible. Its vehicle or route may have separate authorisation.

Second check: read the complete meeting instruction

“At the port” and “Main Lobby” may be too broad. The final confirmation should identify an indoor or outdoor position, a landmark, the operator name and how the guide will be recognised.

Compare your position with the Halong excursion pickup guide. If the message names the flagpole, use the flagpole meeting instructions. Do not stop at the first sign saying “lobby” if the confirmation names the outside entrance or another authorised point.

Send a useful location update

A message saying “We are outside” is difficult to act on. Send one of these types of update:

  • “We have just left Gangway [number/deck if known].”
  • “Port staff directed us to an internal vehicle queue.”
  • “We are inside the Main Lobby beside [visible fixed landmark].”
  • “We are outside the named entrance and can see [fixed sign or feature].”
  • “Our group is still moving through the controlled port route.”

Add the lead passenger name and booking number. A photo of a fixed sign can help, but do not photograph restricted security areas or staff documents.

Do not use a moving map pin as the only evidence

Phone location can drift near a large terminal, under cover or between port structures. A pin also does not show which barriers can legally be crossed. Combine it with a fixed landmark and the route described by staff.

Save the meeting instructions before leaving the ship. The offline Halong checklist prevents weak data service from blocking the address and contact number.

Should you go back onboard and try again?

Only when ship staff instructs you. Reboarding may require security, and the other gangway may close or serve a different passenger flow. Trying again can add delay without changing the land-side destination.

If you are still close to the ship, ask a crew member or port official whether the route you used reaches the agreed meeting point. If you have already entered the terminal or public side, remain at a safe staffed place while contacting the operator.

What if the guide is at another exit?

Do not ask the guide to enter a restricted berth area. Share both locations and let the operator and port rules determine the legal meeting solution. The guide may direct you to remain at a fixed point, continue to the original meeting place or use an authorised vehicle.

Follow the guide-not-at-the-meeting-point plan: verify the operator name, contact the correct number, stay visible and agree on one next location. Avoid two groups walking toward each other and repeatedly missing.

If the party becomes separated

Stop further movement when safe. Do not send everyone to search a different gangway. Use the previously agreed regrouping point and keep one person at the original meeting location.

State who is missing, whether the person is onboard or ashore, their phone number and whether they have identification or medication. Use the separated-companion action plan when the person’s location is unknown.

Children and dependent adults should remain with their assigned responsible adult. Do not split caregivers across routes unless the ship or emergency service directs it.

Mobility and the wrong-route problem

A passenger using a wheelchair, walker or rollator should not be asked to reverse a long route without confirming that it is necessary. Tell staff and the operator:

  • the mobility aid and whether the passenger can transfer;
  • the current gangway or port-side position;
  • whether steps, a steep ramp or vehicle boarding is ahead;
  • how long the passenger can stand;
  • whether the rest of the party is together.

The safest solution may be for the guide or vehicle plan to change within port rules. The ship-to-Main-Lobby guide explains why the physical port journey can be substantial.

What if the gangway changes before you disembark?

Update Halong Shore Excursion when the ship announces a different exit, berth or tender landing. Do not assume the old screenshot remains correct. The operator can decide whether the land-side meeting point remains usable or needs a verified change.

Use the berth or landing change guide if the update affects more than the onboard exit.

The return gangway may also change

At the end of the excursion, follow the ship and port instructions then in force. The outward gangway number is not a guarantee for the return. Confirm the ship identity and authorised passenger route before entering the secure area.

Keep the earlier land-side return target even if the outward route was quick. A return queue, internal vehicle wait or different gangway can take longer. Reaching the terminal at all aboard is late.

Prevent the problem before leaving the cabin

  • Check the live gangway deck and independent-passenger instruction.
  • Save the final meeting point and operator contact offline.
  • Choose one lead passenger and one group regrouping point.
  • Keep all cabins together through the port route.
  • Tell the operator if the ship changes gangway, berth or landing.
  • Carry the ship card and documents required by the cruise line.
  • Know both the land-side return target and all aboard.

Ship + Arrival Date details

Send the ship name, exact Halong arrival date, final meeting message, announced gangway or tender information, number of passengers and mobility needs. Halong Shore Excursion uses Ship + Arrival Date → excursion-fit logic to connect the live ship exit with the authorised port pickup.

If you appear at a different land-side point, stay safe, name the fixed landmark and wait for one verified instruction. The goal is to reunite the party and guide without crossing restricted areas or spending the return margin before the excursion even begins.
