A wheelchair user can plan the journey from ship to Main Lobby at Halong International Cruise Port only after the gangway, passenger route, internal transport and assistance handovers are confirmed for that call. Reaching the pier does not establish that the remaining port route works for the passenger or device.
Halong Shore Excursion recommends writing down who helps at each stage and where that help ends. “Wheelchair assistance requested” is incomplete unless it covers the actual gap between ship and meeting point.
This guide covers one specific connection
This article covers the route from the ship through the port to the Main Lobby meeting area. Use the broader Halong port wheelchair-access guide to check the tour vehicle, destination, toilets and return excursion as well.
If the ship tenders or uses another landing point, obtain instructions for that operation instead. A berth-side plan cannot be transferred automatically to a tender day.
Before sailing: describe the passenger and equipment
- Manual chair, power chair, scooter or other aid.
- Make, model, open and folded dimensions.
- Device weight and battery type when powered.
- Whether parts can be removed or the chair folded.
- Whether the passenger can stand, step or transfer to a seat.
- How far the passenger can walk, if any.
- Whether someone must push the chair and who can provide that help.
Send the relevant details to the cruise line and Halong Shore Excursion. An operator checking a tour vehicle does not control the ship’s gangway, and a ship arranging gangway help does not confirm the operator’s vehicle.
Arrange the first handover before leaving the ship
Contact the cruise line’s accessibility team before sailing, then reconfirm with Guest Services onboard. Ask where the passenger should wait, whether the personal chair can go ashore and who accompanies the passenger across the gangway.
Ask one direct follow-up: After the passenger reaches the pier, does that assistance continue to the Main Lobby? If not, obtain the next contact or transport arrangement before disembarking.
If the ship offers a loan wheelchair, ask whether it may leave the ship, who pushes it and where it must be returned. Do not assume a companion can safely manage a long route, slope or heavy device without help.
Recheck the gangway on the day
Gangway angle and the operating route can change with ship position, tide, weather and safety decisions. The crew’s live assessment controls whether and how the passenger goes ashore.
Confirm that the passenger can meet any transfer or step requirement. Do not plan for staff to lift a passenger or powered device unless the cruise line has explicitly arranged an approved method.
Confirm the berth-to-lobby route
The international berth and terminal are separate. Ask port or ship staff for the authorised wheelchair route, including slopes, thresholds, lifts, shelter, seating and the approximate effort or distance for this berth.
Stay on the controlled passenger path. A shorter vehicle lane or barrier opening is not a wheelchair route merely because it appears usable.
The ship-to-Main-Lobby distance guide explains why one map measurement or walking time does not describe the full passenger journey.
If an internal vehicle is operating
Confirm:
- where it boards and drops passengers;
- whether this passenger may use it;
- the boarding step or ramp;
- whether the passenger must transfer to a seat;
- whether the device fits and can be carried safely;
- who handles removable parts;
- what alternative applies if the vehicle is unsuitable.
A luggage compartment that holds a folded manual chair does not support occupied-wheelchair travel. Read the internal transport guide before relying on the service.
Make the Main Lobby handover precise
The guide may wait inside the Main Lobby, outside at a landmark or at another authorised point. The excursion vehicle may wait somewhere else.
Save the exact wording, a landmark photo when supplied and the local contact offline. Tell the operator whether the passenger still needs pushing, toilet time or help between the lobby and vehicle.
If assistance is delayed, stay at the agreed safe point and report the passenger’s exact stage: aboard, at the gangway, on the pier, waiting for an internal vehicle or in the Main Lobby. Do not send the guide to one place while the passenger moves to another.
Know when to stop the attempt
Do not continue if a required ramp, lift, suitable vehicle or person is unavailable; if the passenger cannot meet the live gangway requirement; or if the return method remains unresolved.
Use the pre-agreed shorter alternative or remain aboard. Extra time does not fix an inaccessible connection, and improvising can put the passenger, companion and staff at risk.
Book the return handovers too
Confirm where the excursion vehicle drops the passenger, who assists from there, where the internal vehicle boards and how the crew handles the final gangway. Conditions may differ from the morning.
Set an earlier return target for equipment unloading, toilet needs, assistance queues, security and the full route aboard. Keep the ship accessibility contact and operator contact available offline.
Halong Shore Excursion can use Ship + Arrival Date → excursion-fit logic to connect the live berth or tender plan with each handover. The route is workable only when the passenger, device, assistance and return are all confirmed.
