Ha Long International Cruise Port in Bai Chay is the dedicated port for large ocean cruise ships visiting Halong. It is a different facility from Tuan Chau International Passenger Port, where many local bay cruises begin. Your cruise line’s instructions for the exact sailing determine whether you dock alongside or arrive ashore by tender, and which passenger exit you use.
That distinction matters before you book anything. A driver can be at the right city but the wrong harbour; a bay boat can leave from Tuan Chau while your ocean ship is in Bai Chay. Start with the ocean ship’s arrival point, then identify any separate excursion departure point.
Halong cruise port names: which place does your booking mean?
| Name you see | What it identifies | What to do with it |
|---|---|---|
| Ha Long International Cruise Port / Cảng tàu khách quốc tế Hạ Long | The passenger-port complex in Bai Chay, with an international quay and separate domestic berths | Confirm the ocean-ship arrival arrangement and the public meeting point within or outside this complex. |
| Tuan Chau International Passenger Port / Tuan Chau Marina | A separate passenger harbour on Tuan Chau Island used by local sightseeing and overnight vessels | Use it only if your local boat or transfer confirmation names it. Check whether transport from your ocean ship is included. |
| Hanoi (Halong Bay) | A cruise itinerary destination label | Find the actual coastal port. Hanoi’s Old Quarter is inland and requires a road journey. |
| Hon Gai / Hong Gai or Cai Lan | Names that can appear in regional, maritime or older cruise information | Ask for the exact terminal, berth or tender landing. Do not substitute a Bai Chay or Tuan Chau pin yourself. |
| Halong Bay | The destination or wider cruising area | Obtain a port name and passenger meeting instruction; the bay name alone is insufficient. |
Spelling varies between Ha Long and Halong, but the important distinction is the facility. The word “International” appears in both the Bai Chay and Tuan Chau port names; it does not make them the same place.
Where is Ha Long International Cruise Port?
The port is on the Bai Chay waterfront, near the Sun World visitor area. Its own introduction describes separate facilities for ocean cruise ships and local passenger vessels. An ocean ship can therefore berth at this complex without your sightseeing boat using the same quay, terminal door or check-in counter.
For a local outing, Bai Chay is the immediate area to understand. Quang Ninh Museum and Halong Market 1 are on the other side of the city, in the area commonly called Hon Gai or Hong Gai. They should be planned as separate city journeys. The guide to places near Halong International Cruise Port separates these areas before you choose a walk or a ride.
Save the full port name and your confirmed passenger entrance, rather than relying on a broad map result for “Halong port.” A pin on the water, the international berth or a domestic ticket office may not be where a car can collect you.
Will my cruise ship dock, or will I need a tender?
Halong has a quay capable of receiving large ocean cruise ships, but that does not guarantee an alongside call for every sailing. Read the arrival method shown by your cruise line and recheck the onboard announcement before going ashore.
General information can appear contradictory. The port documents international ships berthing there, while Royal Caribbean’s general accessibility page includes “Hanoi (Halong Bay)” among its tender ports. Those are different kinds of information: one describes port infrastructure; the other is cruise-line guidance. Neither replaces the operating plan for your specific ship and date.
- Docked or alongside: you leave by the assigned gangway and follow the authorised passenger route.
- Tendered: the ocean ship stays offshore and a small boat takes passengers to the assigned landing. Ask about tender tickets, queues and the last return tender.
- Port shuttle: this is a possible land connection inside the port. It is separate from tendering and should not be assumed to operate for every call.
For the detailed boarding implications, use the Halong tender guide. If the ship changes its arrival method, let your excursion operator reassess the meeting and the usable shore window.
Does “Hanoi (Halong Bay)” mean I can walk into Hanoi?
No. The ocean ship arrives at a coastal port; Hanoi is an inland destination. A Hanoi excursion needs transport from that confirmed port, sightseeing time and the entire return journey. It is not a visit to the town immediately outside the gangway.
Do not book a tour that starts at a Hanoi hotel unless the coastal transfer has also been arranged. If your documents name Hai Phong instead of Halong International Cruise Port, ask for a plan from that actual landing. Read what the Hanoi (Halong Bay) itinerary label means when your booking documents do not identify the port clearly.
Where do independent guides and drivers meet?
Your ocean-ship berth, public passenger exit and vehicle pickup are three different locations until your confirmation establishes otherwise. Port access controls determine where an external guide or vehicle can wait. A private excursion does not automatically include vehicle access beside the ship.
The current Halong Shore Excursion private bay itinerary names the flagpole outside the Main Lobby entrance as its pickup point. That is an operator-specific instruction to match against your booking and the day’s passenger route; it is not permission to ignore a different arrival notice.
Keep a landmark photo, the contact number and a fallback instruction offline. If the guide says “Main Lobby” but the ship directs you to another exit, contact the guide from an identifiable staffed location. The Halong excursion pickup guide explains what a usable meeting confirmation needs.
What if my local bay cruise departs from Tuan Chau?
Then there are two port connections to arrange: ocean ship to local boat, and local boat back to ocean ship. Check the exact Tuan Chau lounge or counter, latest check-in, expected return location and road transport in both directions.
A boat advertised as a “Halong cruise” may be sold primarily to travellers coming from Hanoi. Its hotel collection, harbour check-in or overnight programme may not match an ocean-cruise port call. Give the provider your ship name and all-aboard instruction before paying.
Use the Halong Cruise Port to Tuan Chau connection guide to test the complete journey. The transfer between harbours is not included merely because both bookings mention Halong Bay.
How does the docking point affect walking and mobility?
Do not turn the published length of a quay or access bridge into a guaranteed walking distance. Your actual route depends on the berth, gangway, passenger path, terminal exit and any permitted internal transport. The same building can involve different approaches on different calls.
For a wheelchair, scooter or limited walking range, first ask the cruise line about getting ashore on this call. Then confirm the route to the excursion vehicle and the vehicle’s ability to carry the passenger and device. An accessible shore attraction cannot solve an unsuitable gangway or tender.
On return, allow for the same final port journey. A car reaching the public entrance at all aboard has not delivered you back to the ship on time. A tender call also needs the ship’s last-tender instruction built into the return plan.
The port information to send before booking
Send Halong Shore Excursion a screenshot showing your ship name, arrival date, scheduled port times and any berth or tender note. Add your party’s walking needs and the exact local boat confirmation if you already have one. Keep the latest onboard all-aboard and landing instructions with it.
Start with the Port Call Guide for your ship and arrival date, then have the meeting and excursion checked against the current notice. A useful confirmation names the real landing, the meeting point, the activity departure and the route back aboard. It does not stop at “Halong Bay.”
