Vietcombank Hạ Long at 166 Hạ Long Street, Bãi Cháy is a staffed bank location to check if you need to exchange foreign banknotes during a port day. Contact the branch first to confirm that it will buy your currency, in your denominations, on the date and at the time you can visit.
Halong Shore Excursion recommends confirming the transaction before paying for transport. A verified bank address and normal counter hours do not guarantee that a particular foreign-cash exchange can be completed.
Verified bank details in Bãi Cháy
Vietcombank’s own information identifies its Hạ Long branch headquarters at:
- Branch: Vietcombank Hạ Long — Trụ sở Chi nhánh
- Address: 166 Hạ Long Street, Bãi Cháy, Quảng Ninh
- Telephone in Vietnam: 0203 3811 808 or 0203 3811 911
- Telephone from an international phone: +84 203 3811 808 or +84 203 3811 911
- Listed counter hours: Monday–Friday, 07:30–11:30 and 13:00–17:00; closed Saturday and Sunday
These details were rechecked against official Vietcombank material on 13 September 2026. Reconfirm the hours for your visit, especially near a public holiday. The midday break matters on a short port call, and arriving just before a session ends may leave too little time for identification and counting.
What should you ask before travelling to the branch?
Tell the bank the currency, approximate amount and note denominations. Ask:
- Can this counter buy these physical foreign banknotes from a visiting cruise passenger today?
- Which identification is required, and must the original passport be presented?
- Are there restrictions on denomination, issue series, writing, tears, folds or other note condition?
- What rate applies, and is any fee deducted from the final VND payout?
- What is the latest practical arrival time for the transaction?
If the ship retains your passport, explain that before starting the trip. Do not assume a photocopy, phone image or cruise card will satisfy the bank. Ask the cruise line how and when the original can be accessed.
Make sure the driver goes to the correct location
Save the full destination as “Vietcombank Hạ Long, số 166 đường Hạ Long, Bãi Cháy.” Show the address as well as the bank name. A search for “Vietcombank,” “Hạ Long” or “Quảng Ninh” can return an ATM, transaction office or branch in another part of the city or province.
Confirm the pickup point for the return before entering the bank. The Halong taxi safety guide explains how to record the vehicle and correct terminal destination.
A bank counter and an ATM solve different problems
An ATM can dispense VND from an eligible card; it does not convert the foreign banknotes already in your wallet. A bank counter may buy cash but can require identification, suitable notes, an available currency service and queue time.
If withdrawing by card is acceptable, compare it using the ATM guide near Halong Cruise Port. Check your own bank’s fees and withdrawal controls before leaving the ship. Do not make repeated attempts after an unclear ATM result without checking whether an earlier transaction posted.
How should you check the exchange at the counter?
Before handing over the notes, ask the staff to show:
- the bank’s cash-buying rate for the exact currency;
- the accepted amount after any rejected notes;
- any fee or adjustment;
- the final amount of Vietnamese dong you will receive.
Count the VND at the counter and keep the transaction receipt. Put transport money in a separate place before leaving. The Halong cash-exchange guide explains why the headline rate and final payout need separate confirmation.
Use only a bank or clearly authorised exchange counter
Do not exchange money with a person on the street or a business that cannot show it is authorised for foreign-currency exchange. A slightly better quoted rate does not compensate for counterfeit-note risk, an unrecorded transaction or disagreement over the amount.
Keep foreign notes in your control until the rate and payout are clear. Do not accept a request to move to another location or hand cash to an intermediary who says they will exchange it elsewhere.
Does the bank visit fit your port call?
Count more than driving time. Include disembarkation, reaching the landside exit, finding transport, the bank queue, the midday closure if relevant, the transaction and the complete journey back through the correct terminal.
Set a latest time to leave the bank. If the service is unavailable, identification is insufficient or the queue threatens the return margin, use the prepared alternative. Do not cross to another district without checking the new route and counter first.
Keep enough VND or another confirmed payment method to reach the ship even if the exchange fails. Use the Halong return-buffer guide for the full route.
Halong Shore Excursion can apply Ship + Arrival Date → excursion-fit logic to the branch hours, port exit, transport plan and all-aboard time. Essential cash should be solved before optional shopping.
