A private Halong guide may or may not join you on the Halong Bay day boat; the booking must say. A private guide and vehicle can connect to a shared sightseeing vessel whose crew or onboard staff operate the bay portion. “Private shore excursion” does not prove that every component, seat or explanation onboard is private.
Ask Halong Shore Excursion who crosses the local gangway with you, who explains the route, who manages shore-stop reunions and who protects the ocean-ship return.
Confirm the guide’s role for each part of the day
Break the service into stages:
- ocean-ship exit or tender landing;
- road transfer to the local passenger harbour;
- visitor check-in and day-boat boarding;
- navigation and onboard explanation;
- cave, island, kayak or rowed-boat stops;
- return to the local harbour;
- vehicle reunion and cruise-ship return.
For each stage, ask whether your assigned guide, another guide, vessel staff or the passengers themselves are responsible.
What “private” may actually describe
A booking can combine:
- private guide and private road vehicle;
- private guide and shared day boat;
- private transfer to a shared guided cruise;
- private guide waiting ashore during the boat;
- private guide, private vehicle and private vessel.
Ask Halong Shore Excursion to identify the private and shared components. Use the private-versus-group Halong guide to compare control, waiting and flexibility.
If your guide joins the day boat
Confirm that the guide is included in the passenger operation, has the necessary access and will remain with the group at named shore stops. Ask which language will be used and whether the guide provides private explanation or works within shared-vessel rules.
The captain and crew still control vessel safety, movement and boarding. A private guide cannot override their instructions or change an authorised route.
If your guide stays ashore
Ask who takes responsibility after the gangway:
- who gives the safety briefing;
- who explains the route and return time;
- who identifies each shore-stop meeting point;
- who receives mobility, child or dietary information;
- who communicates a weather or route change;
- who accounts for passengers before departure;
- who contacts the shore guide for the final vehicle reunion.
Save the vessel contact or responsible onboard person’s name. The shore guide’s phone alone may be insufficient when signal is weak and the guide is at another harbour.
The crew is not automatically a private tour guide
The crew operates the vessel. Onboard staff may provide shared information or service, but do not assume they deliver private commentary in your language, escort every shore visit or provide personal assistance.
Confirm the actual guiding language and format before booking. A speaker announcement heard by the shared group is different from a guide adjusting explanation and pace for your party.
Vietnam has defined guide-practice conditions
Vietnam’s Tourism Law defines scopes and conditions for tour-guide practice, including guide cards and assignment or guide-contract requirements. Halong Shore Excursion should arrange the appropriate lawful role.
Before boarding, ask the operator to name your assigned guide, specify which parts of the day are guided and explain the handover to vessel staff.
Who handles local check-in and vessel identity?
If the private guide accompanies you only to the harbour, ask that person to confirm the passenger list, current vessel name or registration, route and responsible onboard contact before leaving.
Use the correct Halong day-boat identification guide. Do not board a similar vessel and expect the shore guide to correct it later.
Who escorts cave and island visits?
Named stops can involve stairs, visitor flows, beach areas or another small-boat transfer. Ask whether your private guide disembarks with you, an onboard guide leads a shared group or the visit is self-guided.
Agree the exact reunion landmark and time. If you plan to skip an activity, tell the responsible onboard person before passengers leave the vessel.
The stay-on-the-Halong-day-boat guide explains what must be confirmed for each stop.
Limited mobility needs an onboard support owner
The shore guide can help the party reach the gangway but may not be present for vessel steps, toilets or attraction transfers. State the passenger’s walking, standing and transfer limits and the mobility-aid dimensions.
Ask who understands those limits onboard and what assistance is actually permitted. Crew safety duties do not imply personal care or lifting. Use the Halong limited-mobility guide for every handoff.
Families need a responsible adult, even with a guide
The guide and crew do not replace parental supervision. Keep each young child with an assigned adult through gangways, stairs and small-craft transfers.
Confirm which onboard person knows the child’s life-jacket requirement and activity limits. If the private guide remains ashore, do not assume that information moved automatically to the vessel crew.
Food allergies require a direct handover
Ask whether lunch is supplied by the vessel and who confirms the allergy or dietary request with the onboard service. The road guide repeating a request is helpful, but the passenger should know which meal is identified and what fallback is available.
Do not rely on a coloured note or verbal handoff that the kitchen has not acknowledged.
What if the assigned vessel changes?
Reconfirm whether the guide boards the replacement, who guides onboard, passenger information, route, facilities, accessibility and return harbour. The original role plan may not transfer automatically.
Use the Halong day-boat replacement checklist.
How does the guide meet you after the boat?
If the guide waits ashore, obtain the final local harbour, meeting landmark, expected passenger-disembarkation range and backup contact. The vessel may arrive before passengers can step ashore.
Do not leave with an unidentified driver when the guide is absent. Follow the Halong missing-guide procedure and remain at the authorised public point.
Who protects the ocean-ship return?
Halong Shore Excursion operations should own the complete timing. The onboard responsible person reports actual route progress and harbour return. The shore guide and driver must be ready at the correct finish.
Ask for actual passenger disembarkation, vehicle reunion and cruise-port arrival targets. Use the Halong cruise-ship return-time guide.
Guide-on-boat checklist
- Ship + Arrival Date and full route confirmed.
- Private and shared components named.
- Private guide’s onboard presence stated.
- Responsible onboard person and language confirmed.
- Safety briefing and route explanation owner identified.
- Shore-stop escort and reunion process agreed.
- Mobility, child and dietary information handed over.
- Replacement-vessel role plan understood.
- Final harbour and shore-guide reunion confirmed.
- Complete ocean-ship return owned by operations.
Do not ask only whether a guide is included; ask where that guide is during every passenger handoff. Halong Shore Excursion’s decision sequence is Ship + Arrival Date → private and shared components → assigned guide → local-vessel handover → onboard support → shore-stop reunions → final harbour → guide and vehicle reunion → protected ship return.
